Again, eloquent justification/description, PP, and I think most people would want to understand what really happened. The use of the term "animal" I'd apply to any criminal, regardless of color, and a deserved adjective based on the behavior we have seen. People who treat others as they did, with clearly no regard for others, are not deserving of any special "human consideration" in my mind. What they did was inexcusable, plain and simple.

You can say what you want about Baltimore, but I can't stand the place. Worked in East Balto for 3 years and was relieved to leave.

I've watched the video of her interview and the full story doesn't jibe with the quoted statement. It seems as if the primary instigation was that one of the attacker's friends or boyfriends made a pass at Ms. Poli. It seemed to escalate when they realized she was transgendered.

The attack was ugly and the girls should be prosecuted in accordance with he juvenile justice system. I still think we should put all the "sky is falling" rhetoric away and explore how our response was influenced by the race of the victim and the attackers, but that is another question for another day.

14:08 you sound like a nice person but a little naive. What possible context could excuse such behavior? I don't know if you are talking about bad upbringing, misunderstanding of transgender issues, or what else. The context is on the video and is really all the information needed. It is probably all the information the prosecuting attorneys will need to get a conviction in court as well. In this particular situation where a little bit beyond 'why the hate?'. This is a crime and I don't give a good GD what happened beforehand or what the victim's personal situation was. I WTF was the slavery comment all about?

I don't think the level of violence is justified by any means. If they truly were scared, they simply could have screamed for help or shoved Ms. Poli out and then sought help. They had better options. The violence they demonstrated was disgusting, especially once it became clear that Ms. Poli had no intentions of harming them and that there were bystanders who presumably could have helped if she had.

I'm only offering a possible alternative understanding of the situation, since the typical hand wringing about the downfall of society and description of the two attackers as "animals" is rarely productive and, oddly enough, a far more common reaction when the perpetrators of such attacks are people of color.

Can I say with any confidence that this assuredly the case? Absolutely not. But before we conclude that society is doomed and two young girls are animals undeserving of human consideration, maybe we should step back and try to understand what REALLY happened.

What REALLY happened is they were animals who beat a person beyond what the circumstances required. And make no mistake, the circumstances didn't require ANY violence.

I teach mostly AA males and females. And while we have our problems, I can say that my students - even with the obstacles they face - would never behave in that animalistic way.

So although many are poor and come from broken homes, they would never stoop so low.

This is just getting absurd. Our country has a history of enslavement and oppression of racial minorities, immigrants, women, religious minorities, gays and lesbians, and the poor but it is a viscous attack by two young girls that is evidence of our country falling apart. Really?
