wow, nice behavior at at McDonalds in Baltimore County

I meant what I wrote; they ARE victims.

Ignorance breeds ignorance. Abuse moves through generations. If that's all you see and experience, that's what you know. Some overcome it; others succomb to it. Do you think kids are born bad? They model what they see and experience.

Live their lives for a day and see if you can walk around in rose-colored glasses. Ignorance is dangerous; it's the root of evil.

I'm no enabler in my job. I will get in a kid's face when necessary. But how many of us will do that? In looking back, I have to admire my friend's parents who would pull kids on the street and RIP into them for cursing or for wearing clothing that was inappropriate. As kids, my friends and I were mortified. However, I can remember the looks on their faces as they stood there, frozen, b/c someone actually took an interest in them.

Mass mentality is dangerous, but 1-1, kids break down and open up. That's how you reach them.

Sadly, many on this board look at the "masses" and come up with sweeping generalizations.

So rather than criticize and blame the victim, do something. Or should teachers be the only people doing the saving?

PP please tell me you meant are NOT VICTIMS. Maybe victims of stupidity and ignorance. They knew exactly what they were doing.

Exactly. You cannot commit that kind of crime against humanity and not have major consequences. The children will bear the sins of the parents.

Wow, just wow. I hope you are just trolling. If not, it is going to get ugly, because not everyone is willing to passively take a beat down like the victim here.

the attackers are not victims. they had choices to make throughout their short lives, and they consistently made the wrong choice.

It is just sick to look at this video and say those to girls are victims. They savagely beat someone, and could easily have crippled or even killed them. And they continued to beat that person while utterly defenseless.

Ignorance does not breed people are were about to kill another human being, which yes could have been ther result if the cops had not showed up. They are NOT VICTIMS and should be punished by the full extent of the law. Then educate them in jail or juve as to why they ended up in there.

I am not disagreeing with this. I'm only questioning WHAT brought them to this point.

Again - not everyone reaches this level. I had a student whose mother basically whored her out to her own grandfather b/c he was their meal ticket. Yet despite the abuse, she's now living own her own, making money and looking after younger siblings. And she's one of many.

Unless you hear the stories behind these "perps," you have no idea what's going on in their lives.

no question that most likely they grew up in fatherless homes with screwed up moms who did not emphasize education. but whose fault is that? agreed, not really their fault, but is that the fault of the government or society or the fault of the parents and the local communities? public education is free. so many resources are free. no need for this vicious cycle to perpetuate forever.

I am not the pp you qoted, but I posted to dis agree with you. I see your point in the backgrounds of the lives of these people, and it still does not excuse behaviors but I see what you are conveying. My issue is that say these two girls have no extensive issues (we all have issues) they are just mean vicious women....then I have no understanding or sympathy for them. Make better choices and stop acting like barbarians.

In the two attackers' lifetimes, violent crime has dropped over 60% nationwide. SIXTY FUCKING PERCENT!

This attack was horrific and the girls should be punished severely. But they are still human being, not animals. And their actions in no way demonstrate a "downfall" of society. A little perspective goes a long way.

as opposed to every other country on Earth? despite the shared history (and despite the drop in violent crime from horrible highs during the crack epidemic), we still have a much more violent society than almost any other western nation. our lower socioeconomic classes are much more violent than those of similar countries, for whatever reason.

The point is that it is hard to look at any reasonable measure of America versus its past and conclude that we are currently devolving into violent anarchy. The problem is that we see more of it because of 24/7/365 news coverage and the omnipresence of information via the internet. If this happened 10 years ago, people wouldn't even know. That doesn't mean the situation in question is not an issue or that we should be happy with where we are. But we need to stop with all the fear mongering, sky is falling bullshit. Because it's just that.

disagree. compare our violent crime statistics with the UK, France, Germany, Japan or Korea. Our "peers". For whatever reason (racism, lack of opportunity causing disassociation, cultural, etc.), the african-american crime rate in this country pushes our overall rate into the stratosphere. I have no idea for the reason (other than I know it is not inherent), but I do know enough to know it is not acceptable and needs to be addressed.
