how many of us did not see close MAGA family members this holiday season?

And perhaps the most toxic part is that they every time we're with my parents we're handed a long, typed out letter about how we are going to hell. The letters ares all about how they fear for our souls and at holiday gatherings (for the past 2-3 years) before eating we have to listen to a 30 minute talk about it all. In the context of the MAGA beliefs this is just all too much. Their political beliefs make them about the least Jesus-like people we know and yet they never shut up about their faith. I just can't.

This is abuse, full stop. You don’t owe people like this anything, not even if they birthed you, and ESPECIALLY if they birthed you. Family owes you more care, not less.

By keeping your distance, maybe you can salvage a decent memory after they’re gone, remember them from a time when they presumably weren’t such nasty horrible creatures. My heart is with you. It’s time to start mourning them as if they’re already gone.

Apple doesn't fall from the tree. PP's children will say the same about them 30 years from now.

No,. probably not.

Any decent parent would put aside the politics and such for a visit. Mine usually did, even my in laws would turn off FOX News when we visited.

For the record, all elderly people aren't caught up in the hyper-partisan cable news political world.

We did not call them or see them this holiday season for the first time in my 51 years. My brother was the same.

Anyone else? I pretend to not care but it's just awful.

Not even call them? You're a real piece of work.

No not that poster however you are the "real piece of work" and anti American and a traitor and dumb. Fixed it for you.

MAGA has no idea what they have done and the rest of us should not have to be in the same country as those utterly stupid shits.

PP here. I'm not MAGA at all and can't stand Trump. I can promise you though that I loved my parents very much and would never refuse to even call them in their 80s over politics.

PPs like you have no idea what it is like to have a toxic parent. Just because someone is a relative does not mean you have to put up with them no matter what. There are lines. It is healthy and normal to cut people out of your life who cross those lines. It's called having boundaries.

Be grateful you have nice parents who aren't a-holes. No one should have to put up with a-holes no matter how they are related to you.

OP-I'm sorry your parents choose to live their lives in a way that alienated their children. That is 100% on them and don't let any of the idiot PPs tell you otherwise.

+1. Please reconsider this OP. You may have terrible regrets one day.

Or they might not. Don't project your feelings and relationships onto the OP.

Oh look. Nasty grandma found the thread.

What a horrible (and unfounded) thing to say. Shame on you.

This is not “over politics” like the olden days. Some people have MAGA family members openly rooting for celebrating the harm done to supposed loved ones with the mantra of “owning the libs”. How do you sit in the same room with people who are happy to see your family suffer? PP, obviously you do not have parents like this. Be grateful and recognize that some people do not have nice parents like yours.

Politics? this shows how ignorant you are. The disagreement isn’t over tax policy. Support for such a hateful man is unforgivable.

No excuse to support such hate and lack of empathy.

I stay away from the red and blue partisans. It is shocking how hateful the supposed good guys are. They are so unaware of their hypocrisy. MAGA may be disgusting but at least they own it. The other side thinks their sh!t don’t stink. Neither side can think for themselves.

The rest of us are trying to figure out how to keep the ship from listing so far over one one or the other, so we don’t keel over.

um, no. You may happen to know someone who is D and not nice. But to equate D’s and Rs right now is outlandish. Trump, pretty much all elected Rs and maga represent such acrimony and nastiness. The current potus goes out of his way on social media to torture those are suffering. The behavior is vile and disgusting and so are those that support it.

Only idiots think the side they need to be fighting with is to the political left or right of them. All regular non ultra-wealthy people are in a struggle to maintain some semblance of control over their Federal Government. We're either all in this together or we're doomed to fail. Your neighbor isn't your enemy. Money in politics is your enemy.

I agree money in politics is a huge problem.

np We all could. And I refuse to see any family or friends who voted for MAGA

And you think MAGA is a cult but you're too high and mighty for your family. Ok. Be that way.

NP - How are you posters defining family? Does family mean DNA, or actual people in your lives who love, support, and if necessary take a bullet for you. I have people who share my DNA who are literally worthless, excrement, allegedly human beings. Those people are not my family, and I do not claim them just because we share DNA. OTOH, I have friends who love, support, encourage, call themselves sistas from another mother who I know I can depend on at the lowest points in my life. My husband does not share my DNA and has jumped in front of a bullet for me. Those people are my family. OP stated that her and her DH have suffered due to Trump and her parents gave not one iota. You people have no idea what type of relationship OP had with her parents pre-Trump. Maybe the relationship was hanging on a shoestring and the Trump worship was just a bridge too far.
