how many of us did not see close MAGA family members this holiday season?

I have not spoken to my 83 and 82 year old parents for 9 months because they are fully in the MAGA cult.
We live in DC and our lives, jobs and income have been personally impacted by this administration.
We did not call them or see them this holiday season for the first time in my 51 years. My brother was the same.

Anyone else? I pretend to not care but it's just awful.

My one and only MAGA friend has vanished into the shadows. He was so happy last year. I don't think he's happy now, otherwise he'd still be saying "Look at this! It's great!". We had a rule where we could talk politics but stop before getting angry. Apparently he's not comfortable with that anymore.

Your choice to not see them is awful. They could die at any time, and you're allowing Trump and politics to keep you from seeing your aging parents. I can't stand Trump either, but I would never refuse to be with my parents.

My eldest brother, the sibling I was closest to in a very dysfunctional family system, came down with pneumonia and took a bad turn while being treated in hospital - he died the day after Thanksgiving.

My grief is very much complicated by the fact that we had basically not been in touch since 2016, because he was such a hateful jerk once he went full MAGA - he became like another person and refused outright to put politics aside so we could focus our relationship and conversations on other topics.

It isn’t like we were super close - we lived a few states apart and didn’t talk often anyway. But I hoped that once the fever broke we might repair things. Now that’s never going to happen and frankly for me it’s just another reason to loathe the hate monger who gets off on stoking divisiveness in this country. I know many families and marriages which have been fractured by MAGA and it’s truly disturbing.

Some extended family is MAGA so I avoid talking politics with them but otherwise keep up the relationships and talk about other things. It’s not hard for me to separate politics from life but YMMV.

Hmm. My raw-diet-eating, doctor-bashing, anti-vaxxer aunt died of Covid. When I got married to my doctor husband, she'd send me "literature" proving that vaccines were bad and that we shouldn't vaccinate our kids. I didn't really have much to do with her after that, and then the pandemic happened, she refused the vaccine, ran around socializing, and she died.

No regrets. People on here are forgetting that it's not just people's abstract theories we are disagreeing with - it's their enablement of cruel and murderous policies. If they had no voted for that, USAID would not have been brutally dismantled and thousands of HIV-positive babies would not be condemned to death in South Africa. This isn't about petty differences of opinions with no consequence. This is about life and death matters. Votes have lethal consequences.
