how many of us did not see close MAGA family members this holiday season?

It’s not just a difference in politics like it might’ve been 10 or 15 years ago if they are truly in a MAGA cult or in Qanon or something. We are living two different realities and it’s very stressful. We got this far as civilized humans by cooperating and being in social networks, and so when you are talking to someone who has a completely different reality than you, it is very disconcerting and psychologically damaging. talking to relatives who think Covid was a hoax and then it wasn’t even a real condition and it was just a way to get Biden elected, talking to people who have facts totally wrong about immigration or how many women are getting late term abortions, or how many women are murdering their babies after they’re born and it’s legal, it’s not right.

It’s also psychologically damaging to talk to people who seem to have no empathy and are OK with people being randomly deported or killed.

It’s not just a matter of politics or different policy opinions. It’s different realities and world views.

This! When will MAGA get it?

Exactly. Many posters don't understand this. It's is an alternate reality.

The MAGA in my family were toxic since before Trump. I avoided them then and now.

I don’t avoid my family. I avoid talking to them (him, just one? But also in laws) about any of this.

My father flipped out when I had rude things to say about (not Grennell, but someone like him that I’m glad I can’t remember right now). Eric Prince? No. I’ll remember later.

My mil had the audacity to say “You’re watching that show trial?” to me when I said, “today I was watching the January 6th hearings.” She asked me what I had done that day. She was basically an adult(!) in utter denial that anything happened that day.

It’s maga who is extremely negative and emotional. I never would talk to them the way they talked to me. If she mentioned she had watched x y or z (like whatever show, “10000 mules”) I would have moved on in the conversation. Why is my dad so bent on defending someone who does NOT care about him? And then I’m right here in front of him, caring about him, and he’s all mad at me.

Same here. The people in my family who weren't nice or caring to others to begin with are the ones who are still MAGA / Trump voters.

I kept them at arm's length before, and continue to now. Since I no longer have to see them at Christmas, I don't bother.

When they end up losing their businesses, unable to pay for their health insurance, or have people close to them shot in the street or dragged off to the camps.

For some it might take all three, plus their kids being sent to fight overseas.

I’ve steered clear of voting Trump or MAGA, but the vile coming out of the party I’ve supported makes my stomach churn too. I wish the Dems would snap out of it but I think they’re happy with whatever drug they’re taking.

You aren’t maga, you are just Nazi adjacent.

Last spring my spouse who is a high ranking fed came very close to losing his job during all the DOGE insanity (and did lose more than 100 direct reports) and my dad said they were all redundant because well, Fox News told him so. We had a huge blow up over this.
And perhaps the most toxic part is that they every time we're with my parents we're handed a long, typed out letter about how we are going to hell. My parents have always been religious but in their old age it's been escalated to deep fear of eternal damnation. The letters ares all about how they fear for our souls and at holiday gatherings (for the past 2-3 years) before eating we have to listen to a 30 minute talk about it all. In the context of the MAGA beliefs this is just all too much. Their political beliefs make them about the least Jesus-like people we know and yet they never shut up about their faith. I just can't.

Sounds like some of my family members. These MAGAs are beyond hope. People here telling you to essentially "suck it up" have no idea. Would they hang out with Hitler too?!

Nah they will still blame the liberals and Biden.

You've had to make your point ad nauseam because the love is love saying does not mean that you will suffer abuse. It means that you welcome those who are persecuted for their race, religion, status, etc.

Of course this needs to be explained to you. It's a bit ironic since MAGA is the antipathy of love, kindness, or compassion.

Yup. My MAGA cousin said she was glad that Trump closed her rural hospital in her red state because it was "poorly run." She almost died of Covid and will now have to travel 1 hour for acute medical care. I guess if she doesn't care, I don't need to. Whatevs!

As soon as you resort to N-word #2, you confirm that you have no logical evidence, & lose the argument.

And you believe nobody is above the law unless they are an illegal immigrant. In that case they can do whatever they want, & you’re a xenophobe if you disagree.
