Touché. Or do you get as equally upset about school shootings? Personally, I’d rather my kids be trans than dead.

Why does it have to be one or the other? How about neither.

We could have had neither, if we didn’t have public figures spewing hateful messages, parents taught to respect differences, and had gun control. But this is not the world we live in. We have had kids write nazi symbols in bathrooms. I’d rather have MCPS send messages of respect and acceptance in this day and age.

You know what I am scared of? That now that the school is all over the conservative media, some psycho will drive up and try to liberate the kids a la Comet pizza gate. But seems that OP and whichever parents went to conservative media prefer that to trans people feeling normal.

I’m waiting patiently for some angry conservative to explain the potential harm.

I just don’t see why letting people be recognized as trans and/or nonbinary is a problem.

I also don’t get why they think someone presenting in a school is magically effective at persuading kids of anything. Surely kids should be exposed to conflicting and varied human beliefs in school? Isn’t that the point of school?

It’s not like we decide how the world is, make a slideshow, and graduate unflinchingly orthodox kids.

I mean haven’t you guys ever met someone who went to Catholic school? I actually don’t know any devout Catholic school alumni.

I do. But of course, it’s no guarantee.

A lot of the discussion here reflects that people have strong feelings about what content their children are exposed to in school. MCPS should be more mindful of that when selecting speakers, particularly given the context of the prior lawsuit.

I for one am thrilled that the government is prioritizing learning about transgenderism at the expense of boring uncool topics like history, math, science, and language.

Yes, American student academic outcomes are falling behind the rest of the world every year, but our society will be so much better now that kids understand this new way of thinking. Hopefully they have a module that covers the experimental lifesaving “medical care” that is now available to many students as well.

A wonderful and strategic use of taxpayer funds.

Is this real? Why the f do sixth graders need a “Transgender Awareness Week”?
Did you go through the slideshow linked in the news story? It’s mostly a lesson about how to come out and how to be nonbinary versus how to be an ally. One of the slides has links to 10 different videos and asks students to watch 1. Almost all of the videos are nonbinary people who were assigned female at birth. There is a real social contagion to this and I think in a few years people will be ashamed when they look back at what kids were exposed to.

Also, as a teacher there is no way you could get through these slides in one advisory period. Gender is already covered in health classes. Kids are SO over these lessons shoved in their face all the time
How is any of this a school’s responsibility?

Seriously, right-wingers here, how is learning about human experience and developing sensitivity towards others bad? There are lots of ways to self-isolate in an echo chamber where people who believe the same things can tell one another how right they are. Public school isn't and shouldn't be one of those places.

Come on parents. Let’s call them!

Mcps isn’t actually giving parents an opportunity to opt out though.

Article says that opt out procedures were explained and allowed.

But they’re not. When kids start middle school and asked to give their pronouns, it starts.

What's wrong with giving pronouns? You don't always know what someone uses based on what they look like. It's not really a trans thing, just being polite and respectful, right? Just because people didn't do it when we were kids doesn't mean it's somehow scandalous or whatever...

I teach two cis boys that appear to be AFAB because they have long hair and delicate features. At that age, many kids haven’t hit puberty so they mostly have high voices. These boys have names that are gender neutral. If I hadn’t asked their pronouns, I would have misgendered them.

Learning about others is never a bad thing

MCPS has learned nothing from its costly Supreme Court loss.

You actually think it’s a tutorial? Come on, don’t be so gullible.

This is btw one of the reason people send their kids to private school—so they can select a school that aligns with their educational priorities and values. If the school is doing something they’d like to see changed, they have a conversation with the administration and changes are either made or not (and if not the parent then makes a decision about whether the issue is one that necessitates leaving the school or not). Changes can be made quickly when needed.

At MCPS, you have a group of people making policy and curriculum decisions for a massive number of families and there’s very little recourse if you do not agree with those policies or curriculum choices.

My question is—was this a lesson/presentation all MCPS 6th graders received or just Westland?

Nonbinary is a social construct

Gender is, you mean.

Nonbinary simply means something other than X or Y.

Why does the New York Post care what’s happening in a Maryland junior high school?

It’s constantly being pushed and pushed and pushed into their brains. It’s not just one lesson. It’s a whole week and then pride month and then covered in sex ed class.

It’s way past the concept of accepting everyone as they are. It’s, “this is the way you should be for us to think you’re special and accept you.”

When i was a kid my mom gave me a "Mia Farrow" haircut and i was mistaken for a boy. Should i have blamed the teacher for not asking my pronouns or my MOM for giving me the awful haircut?
