Forget about telework for now--worry about our jobs

What a mess.

The Federal workforce is around one percent of the economy, and firing one percent of them doesn't move the needle at all.

An economist could argue that this will be good for the economy--freeing up skilled workers to work on more productive things in the private sector (see, for example, Argentina).

Where do you think all of these private sector jobs are magically coming from?

Supply tends to create its own demand. If the price of rice were 5 cents a pound I'd buy a lot more of it.

Why did you complete ignore the comment regarding NIH grants. Also, every article regarding Argentina’s recent austerity measures describes them as having caused a massive recession and record-high poverty.

The IMF and World Bank both predict 5 percent GDP growth for Argentina this year. That could be us next year.

So move to blue collar jobs - learn a trade; go into hospitality

So screw off.

I’m glad you aspire for the United States to be like Argentina. It says a lot.

This is what is going to happen

They are coming for your pensions as well

Don’t tell me they are safe norms are gone for good.

I’m afraid it’s a bit more serious than that. Most of us are very specialized and even though there is always some movement in and out of private industry, there are not going to be hundreds/thousands of openings all at once. And certainly not all in DC. If I lost my job I have no ilusiones - my salary would be significantly reduced and I’d probably end up getting a law school friend to help me get hired doing doc review at their firm. Would not be pretty.

I agree. I know many people in the federal government at the forward edge of their fields, doing things that only the government has the means to fund.

It's safe to say that many people voted for Trump knowing that it may cost them their job.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but do you remember what you were all saying when Biden shut down coal? You said they need to "upskill". Learn to code, etc. These were coal miners from generations of coal miners, working in horrible conditions, dying of job related cancer, etc, living out in remote places like the hills of West Virginia. And literally no one on the left cared about these people. It's a lot to ask that these people, and the many people who've been beaten up by Biden's policies, suddenly care about well educated, highly paid people. So, take your own advice. If you think you're too niche to work outside the government (which I doubt), then unskill to something marketable. The government workforce tends to come from a lot of privilege-- leverage it. Network. Do not pity yourself and be a victim.

Yes, the party advocating for UBI, universal healthcare, and job training for displaced workers don’t care.

Wanting to reduce pollution and help them find jobs that aren’t killing generations of them: heartless

Exactly.

My neighbor was fired last night. He's one of the IGs confirmed under Trump. It did not come as a great surprise.

Agreed. The impact will not be limited to feds. And with regulatory agencies and DOJ frozen, biglaw will take a big hit.

This is my fear, that we're heading toward a recession. Didn't Elon say it was going to be painful?

People have been screaming recession for the last five years. With every bozo trading stocks on their cell phone, there is no way for the market to go but up. The same applies for housing - everyone's OK with signing their life away because realtors and the bank came up with the numbers. Housing prices are insanely manipulated thanks to Zillow (the Zestimate is such a joke, you can go in and edit your house and drive up the value.) The jobs report is all fake and is always revised months later.

We're living in an alternate reality where everyone is high 24/7 and even if DJ himself came on live TV and said there will be a recession tomorrow, the next day the market would be up 2% based on some meme story or 10 second TikTok video.

Good luck everyone. This is a joke.

I doubt.
Aggregate demand (private and institutional) will go down reducing corporate revenues, partially offset by taxes that Trump will lower. All of that on top of tariffs, will prompt private sector to cut costs/jobs even more drastically than feds, to satisfy banks/stockholders. You likely need to count feds and contractors - 3% of total workforce. Tariffs will bring some manual jobs back to us, while AI will eliminate white collar jobs. So now, we will have a former federal software engineer doing “more productive” job as a truck driver.

I find it quite ironic that you mention chronically bankrupt Argentina, as role model.

This is why I blew up at my parents this week. They made an insensitive comment about return to work and “it’s how work should be conducted”, and she didn’t see past RTO to grasp that both of her children might not have jobs to RTO! Good job mom and dad, trying to make America better for your kids.

"Blew up"? I am sure that went well and helped things and changed their opinion.

People, including your parents are allowed to have their own thoughts.
