Forget about telework for now--worry about our jobs

Many have gotten fired including IGs in the middle of the night.

The requirement is that Congress is told X days ahead of time when IGs are going to be let go.

I am confident this did not happen.

This is no different than Elon firing Twitter staff.

It’s temporally impossible for it to have happened because Trump has not been in office 30 days. It’s illegal on its face.

it's in WaPo:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/01/24/trump-fire-inspectors-general-federal-agencies/

"Trump ousts at least 12 independent inspectors general in late-night purge
The dismissals appeared to violate federal law, which requires Congress to receive 30 days’ notice of any intent to fire a Senate-confirmed inspector general."

Literally this happens to only the lucky.

I know plenty of people who now work for 50% of what they were earning. How is that "even better"? Maybe it's "even better" for those in India and other low cost centers, but definitely not for American based people.

My spouse was remote in big tech, made good-for-us money, had a baby, got laid off a year later. He found a federal ladder role and makes less, but we figured it was stable. Surprise, he's at a targeted agency in one that should have never been a political issue. So 2 years later, he's probably going to be laid off again. Our state pays poorly considering the COL, probably half of what he originally made. We're not really near a lot of private sector jobs, and remote is disappearing. Thankfully we bought while interest rates were low, but we're going to struggle to afford our home, and rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is close to our mortgage.

My life peaked in 2021, and I imagine for many it peaked around 2019, based on Trump’s win. Despite what they hope, it’s not getting better any time soon. 🙁

NOAA or FEMA?

It's safe to say that many people voted for Trump knowing that it may cost them their job.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but do you remember what you were all saying when Biden shut down coal? You said they need to "upskill". Learn to code, etc. These were coal miners from generations of coal miners, working in horrible conditions, dying of job related cancer, etc, living out in remote places like the hills of West Virginia. And literally no one on the left cared about these people. It's a lot to ask that these people, and the many people who've been beaten up by Biden's policies, suddenly care about well educated, highly paid people. So, take your own advice. If you think you're too niche to work outside the government (which I doubt), then unskill to something marketable. The government workforce tends to come from a lot of privilege-- leverage it. Network. Do not pity yourself and be a victim.

Yes, the party advocating for UBI, universal healthcare, and job training for displaced workers don’t care.

Wanting to reduce pollution and help them find jobs that aren’t killing generations of them: heartless

What a mess.

The Federal workforce is around one percent of the economy, and firing one percent of them doesn't move the needle at all.

An economist could argue that this will be good for the economy--freeing up skilled workers to work on more productive things in the private sector (see, for example, Argentina).

Where do you think all of these private sector jobs are magically coming from?

Didn't Obama fire all the Bush IGs that didn't resign? And some IG slots he never filled, because he didn't want IGs investigating those departments.

It’s not the firing, it’s that Trump is doing it illegally (not that it matters, since he has immunity).

DP, but the maga idea is to decimate the Feds and move the critical job functions to private companies owned by cronies. That’s why the Inspector Generals have to be replaced also.

I’m afraid it’s a bit more serious than that. Most of us are very specialized and even though there is always some movement in and out of private industry, there are not going to be hundreds/thousands of openings all at once. And certainly not all in DC. If I lost my job I have no ilusiones - my salary would be significantly reduced and I’d probably end up getting a law school friend to help me get hired doing doc review at their firm. Would not be pretty.

I'm thinking along your lines, OP. Not a lawyer but in a specialized PhD field. I think we could get by on my spouse's much lower salary and savings for a year, and if I'm lucky I'll find something local at a 50% pay cut (fortunately I'm used to living very frugally). I'm trying to figure out how we'd get through job loss because I agree that none of us are safe, and also I want to be free to say no and walk away if I'm the one ASKED to do illegal things.

That said, I don't see how "worrying" helps, we can't stop them with worrying. And I still have to figure out logistics around RTO and extended hours of childcare while I have a job in the meanwhile.

They were fired too? I didn’t see that. All these people have civil service protections. These firings are clearly illegal.

lol at trump caring about what is legal or not.

But those jobs were horrible anyway, so it would ultimately benefit them to find jobs that aren't killing them (if the government made more of an effort to support them where they lived, of course).

Remote work provided opportunities for workers to move back to their families in areas with limited work and start families of their own. How are they supposed to find something else in their small town 2+ hours from major cities if remote work ceases to exist?

We’re yet again failing small towns.

Let’s just move to small towns and turn them blue

No. He prevented the agency from reclassifying their work. If they were hired exclusively for DEI, they are gone.

Exactly - there were probably many who were doing both DEI and EEO; so they were not moved, they just had the DEI removed from their duties. EEO is likely to be keeping them plenty busy

Yeah but so what? They can sue? And what do they do to feed their family during the years that it takes to get their case through the courts? And by the time that happens, damages are minimal because they got new jobs to feed their families.
