As a homeowner, you must clear your sidewalks or cause them to be cleared (i.e., ask/hire someone to do it). Yes, that’s what a law is. |
They'll be cleared. In about 3 days when the sun comes out. Until then, every man for himself. |
|
Where would you like them to go? Its their home and they have the right to live there. If you were a good person you'd help. |
As a good neighbor in all the time you are complaining you could get out there an help. |
Of course that is the ideal, isn’t it? And that’s why my neighbor with cancer has clear sidewalks and I am happy to clear them. But this whole “there is no must” is just wrong. People need to know that others depend on them to clear their sidewalks so kids, people with limited mobility, parents pushing strollers, etc. can safely move through the neighborhood. Or does your idea of neighborliness only go so far? |
Now here’s a good neighbor! |

Aren't the sidewalks owned by the local jurisdiction? Find it intriguing that it's the homeowner's responsibility to keep them clear...
In my neighborhood it is all over the place who doesn't clear their sidewalks. Some people I know as lovely neighbors don't. |
| We live in NOVA and the a-hole owner of the house in front of the bus stop refuses to shovel his sidewalk. He's always out doing yard work and home improvement stuff. He just hates kids, apparently (we don't know if he shoveled when his kids were little, they're in college now and we've only been here a few years). |
Yes, my wife. We bought the house 10 years before the ordinance came out. We have 2 telephone poles on our sidewalk that narrow the path dramatically, but we are still responsible for clearing the snow off all the sidewalk. I assume for ADA reasons, but the telephone poles already violate that. But as I said, we are always the first ones out there clearing the snow - it is the right thing to do, but it's annoying to have a large liability that only burdens half of the neighbors' houses. |
Awww your wife made you. Poor baby. |
Do you think the neighbor that doesn’t shovel ever reciprocates for anything? It’s not like I will shovel your walk and you will cut my grass a couple of times. The dipshits that don’t shovel are the worst neighbors in nearly every respect. |
| The folks who own the richest house on our block haven’t shoveled at all. I’ve brought the issue to the attention - in clear English - and they still DGAF. Their car has also never been registered in DC during the three or so years since they bought the house. |
| Does the Mayor have a duty to clear our roads? Parts of roads in McLean Gardens are covered in ice. Upton Street NW is a disaster in places. Branford Court (near former Russia House) in Ward 2 is an ice rink. |
I help my neighbors but one person can't be responsible for the entire neighborhood or every street leading to the school. |
