Neighbors who don’t bother to clear their sidewalks

Anonymous
The sidewalks in front of a few of the houses adjacent to mine are now ice rinks because their (non-elderly) owners can’t be bothered buying salt and/or shoveling.

Given the forecast temperatures and the lack of sunlight on our side of the street, the ice seems unlikely to thaw until Thursday.

DC regs require people to clear their sidewalks unless they’ve been granted an exemption. Is there any mechanism to report those who fail to do this - and in the process put everyone else in danger - or is this just another one of DC’s laws where compliance is voluntary.

I don't know, but looking at who does and doesn't shove their sidewalks (excepted the elderly and disabled), it's the usual suspects in my neighborhood: the jerks who also let their dogs bark and lunge, who shout angrily whenever they don't get their way, etc... It's part of a profile.

Call 311 or something. Can't think that posting here will accomplish anything at all.

We have a shoveling service that I guess decided the snow was too little to bother. Not everyone is lazy, we both have bad backs and our contractor flaked.

We live in a neighborhood of single family homes - it's the renters in the house that was scooped up by a private equity company a few years ago. I kind of wish it was bought by a flipper; at least it would have been fixed up and sold to a homeowner.

I waited until the sun came out on Monday to shovel out what I could and spread out some sand on the rest. It took about 15 minutes. I lot of kids from the apartments walk down our street to the school and we want it to be safe.

Will do and will report back.

My neighbor is a politician in Maryland and doesn't clean her sidewalk. She has a husband at home.

When I used to live and run in Forest Hills, I always imagined that those were the houses with massive umbrella policies so they didn’t need to care if someone got hurt.

We've had huge umbrella policies in the past and always shoveled.

Isn’t it the owner’s responsibility to shovel the sidewalk?

This is driving me nuts too. Live in Fairfax though so it is not legally required. But even if you can’t shovel you can toss some salt out. The people that never shoveled haven’t even done that.

Call 311 and report the address. I'm sick of the overentitled who think they don't have to be bothered with the safety of their neighbors.

If it's ice, don't walk on it. Wear the right shoes.

We always shovel but were away last weekend so I shoveled when we got back Monday and could barely make a dent in some spots bc the ice was so solid. My puppy got really sick from the neighbors’ salt last storm so that’s not an option. Just going to have to wait for Thursday on this one - I think a lot of ppl were away and in a similar situation. This rain/sleet/snow/deep freeze made for tricky sidewalk conditions.

Do you not know any kids in the neighborhood you can throw some $$$s? I could call on at least 5 teens if needed.

You just gave a shit excuse…and if someone falls on your ice, then yeah they will have a lawsuit.
