Neighbors who don’t bother to clear their sidewalks

No lower form of life than those under 80 and not disabled who do not shovel.

Completely serious, I’d love to put salt out. But my uber progressive neighbors would read me the riot act about some critter or fish. In these cold temps just shoveling is not effective and may actually be worse than doing nothing since at least what little snow there is offers some grip.

They make animal safe products that melt ice. Screw the progressives. Clear you sidewalk.

No, I’m serious. I got a talking to a few years back by a couple of aging wild-eyed aging DC hippy women. Won’t make that mistake again. I’ll just pay the ticket.

None of the homes by Deal where kids get off the bus shoveled their snow not one time for the two snow days. It’s now ice; ridiculous.

Given the forecast temperatures and the lack of sunlight on our side of the street, the ice seems unlikely to thaw until Thursday.

DC regs require people to clear their sidewalks unless they’ve been granted an exemption. Is there any mechanism to report those who fail to do this - and in the process put everyone else in danger - or is this just another one of DC’s laws where compliance is voluntary.

The city itself doesn’t clear the city-owned sidewalks along parks and in front of city operated public schools. How can the city fine homeowners for not clearing their sidewalks when the city doesn’t clear its own?

You can't just walk in the street?

I've had a physical disability since I was 18. You can't see it by looking at me. Sometimes it's worse and sometimes it's better. Don't assume you know who's disabled just by looking at them.

How come the city didn’t clear the sidewalks it owns next to Fort Reno Park, where Deal students have to walk? You’re calling out homeowners for not shoveling 50 feet of sidewalk but not criticizing the city for not shoveling 1,000 feet of sidewalk.

Why?

Post her name. Reporters read DCUM.

Call 311 and report the address. I'm sick of the overentitled who think they don't have to be bothered with the safety of their neighbors.

This annoys me too. In my Maryland neighborhood it’s the big new houses that are the ones that don’t shovel the sidewalk. Such entitlement.

My puppy got really sick from the neighbors’ salt last storm so that’s not an option. Just going to have to wait for Thursday on this one - I think a lot of ppl were away and in a similar situation. This rain/sleet/snow/deep freeze made for tricky sidewalk conditions.

Do you not know any kids in the neighborhood you can throw some $$$s? I could call on at least 5 teens if needed.

You just gave a shit excuse…and if someone falls on your ice, then yeah they will have a lawsuit.

DP. We were away too. I have a service signed up to shovel, and for some reason they never came. By the time we got home and realized they had in fact not shocked for us, it was SOLID ice. I had to use like 20 lbs of ice just to get a narrow path, and my arm is injured so it was very painful.

You could be a decent neighbor and help out. Maybe they have health or other issues going on that makes it so they cannot do it.
