Jimmy Carter has passed away

Funny that my relatively tame comment got deleted. There’s far worse in Wapo comments, like this one, but better stated than my post:

And then there is the perversion of humanity known as one Donald Trump, a convicted felon, which depicts the gross absurdity of our politics today in all its lies, propaganda, and abject hypocrisy. The accomplished life of former President Jimmie Carter, in every capacity, only proves what is possible in humanity with a focus on respect, compassion, and service to others.

Not expecting this one to last long either.

Why wouldn't he have a state funeral in Washington, DC and lie in state at the Capital Rotunda?

Each president makes the formal arrangement. It’s up to Jimmy if he lies in the rotunda.

I think it’s apparent there’s no room for decent people at the top any more. You can’t afford to have any ethics or any sense of decency to succeed these days, especially if you’re going against the maga shower.

Carter wasn’t political and that was his downfall. Luckily for parts of the world that he was released from politics to go on and make a difference in people’s lives.

With the Carter’s and the Carter Center’s help, the Guinea worm has been eradicated in 200 countries from Guinea worm, certified by WHO. The six countries that have not yet been certified as free from Guinea worm are Angola, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, South Sudan. They are so close.

Carter was considered an outsider from DC. Dems and Reps didn’t like him. He didn’t expect to have to deal on stupid things to get a bill passed. He expected Congress to have a conscience and vote for what was best for their country.

I wonder if he requested Trump not to be invited.

Fidel Castro said of all the presidents he dealt with, Carter was the most honest.

I loved his letter that was sent up in the Voyagers:

"We are a community of 240 million human beings among the more than 4 billion who inhabit the planet Earth. We human beings are still divided into nation-states, but these states are rapidly becoming a global civilization. We cast this message into the cosmos, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of humanity.

This Voyager spacecraft was constructed by the United States of America. It embodies our highest aspirations and our deepest hopes. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our goodwill in a vast and awesome universe.

If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message:

This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours."

A terrible President, but one of the finest humanitarians that we will ever see. Every great thing he accomplished in his life was after leaving what we think to be the most important job in the world.

Jimmy Carter showed us how insignificant the presidency really is.

Honestly he wasn’t that bad a President. Probably middle of the pack. He introduced the concept of energy efficiency and energy independence as national policy. Negotiated what has turned into a lasting peace between Israel and Egypt. Restored integrity to the Presidency after Nixon. He made some mistakes but he was far from our worst President. But, yes, his primary accomplishments occurred after he left office, and that’s his real legacy.

The peace accord between Israel and Egypt also influenced 5 other countries to follow, Jordan, the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan – have made peace with Israel.

Probably the biggest impact for peace in the Middle East is due to President Carter.

Why was he a one term president?

I guess the short answer is he was too nice a guy to be president. Plus some bad luck here and there. Unfortunately he was succeeded by one of the worst presidents ever. That’s about when the rot really started setting in.

But some don't like that, they don't care if the entire world burns down if they don't get what they want

He was an intensely good man because he cared very much for other people, and that’s entirely possible without being Christian.

Yes, it's certainly possible to be a good person without being a Christian.

But Jimmy Carter was indeed a Christian and this faith was a guiding light in his life.

He led bible study every week that he could, and I know several people who attended this.

We would be a better nation if more of Christians, and others, followed his example in caring for their fellow neighbors.

I hope both he and Melania have the good sense to not attend the services. Carter was a devout Christian and trump is a godless POS.

I'll give it a +1,000,000 for as long as it lasts.
