It's the fact that an APE representative went to another community forum to solicit comment to influence APS' policy. And if anyone from Alexandria weighed in, shame on them.

What? They were asking how other neighboring school districts handle things. Is that really so nefarious? They even identified themselves as a member of APE.

I'm sure plenty of Arlington parents have opinions about AAP. Not sure that strange.

Since I have to spell it out with crayons:

She. solicited. Alexandria. parents. to. officially. provide. feedback. on. APS'. policy. while. it. was. open. for. public. comment. to. advance. APE's. policy. goals. Not. necessarily. the. community's. wishes.

It's unethical and slimy for outsiders to weigh in. I don't go to FCPS or LCPS' open policy comment section to weigh in on things that absolutely have no bearing on me or my children.

School board members and the system want to hear from their community only.

I can't help you if you don't see how wrong this is.

I think people are getting lost. Becky didn’t solicit Alexandria parents to comment in DCUM or another Facebook group. She directed them to APS’ website during open comment period to influence APE’s position on this policy, to overshadow those who live in the community but do not agree lockstep with APE’s all or nothing position. These comments will go to our school board to inform their position on this policy. This is as official as it gets. And that’s where the outrage comes from. Completely unethical!

We’re not. Keep up.

Then what is "play to win"? Win what? Cellphones in class?

Agree. There are really a lot of parents who seriously cannot leave their kids alone during the day and object to the governor's EO? What on earth is wrong with those parents?

OOP: I see that one link was removed because I accidentally didn't blot out one name. It's causing a lot of confusion in the thread, so I edited it again and reposting for context.

Oh wow wow WOW. I admit that I was a bit confused before at all of the comments, but that link changes everything!

I'm blown away just how brazen this group is.

I'm in the Alexandria group. The earlier link wasn't the whole story, or maybe it was there and got removed by the DCUM admin. This is the APE member's direct quote from her comment to her post in the Alexandria group:

"APS finally unveiled the Away for the Day policy it will vote on in December and it actually is a fully away for the day policy for all K-12 which would be a huge win - APS is gathering feedback until Oct 20. We are concerned that members of the school board are not behind it enough and could not approve it. Opponents are organizing against it so if anyone in this group wants to submit a positive comment, that would be much appreciated!!!!

Calling those of us who support a cell phone ban MAGA and APE and Trumpers is not only inaccurate, it’s just name calling for the sake of demonizing my views. It also makes me think you don’t have persuasive substantive arguments. Can you not drop the politics and move on to the benefits and detriments of cell phone usage by teens in an academic environment? Not every issue is red/blue.

Except that this one is being pushed by MAGA APEs and MAGA Youngkin. That's who you're aligned with. Live with that.

The first step in the survey is to identify your school. If someone from Alexandria wants to click "other" and enter their school name, then they're free to do so. I'd expect APS to disregard that entry.

Hmm. Well, they're right about this (and you're not, if you're opposed).

Maybe not everything in the world is partisan. Maybe some things are good for kids, regardless of whether you bleed red or blue.

You can lie too. I'm sure there are people who responded to the survey multiple times too.

I thought it was about the cellphones and commented as such, but now I want to take it back. I mean, I'm sure APE goes to other [dark money] groups to comment on official policy but to do it in bright sunshine wasn't so bright. Thanks for reposting. Yikea!

And APS doesn’t really care. Feedback surveys are just a pacifier

All, APE Board Member here - it was brought to our attention today that earlier this week a volunteer of our group posted on an Alexandria education facebook page about edtech and SOLs. In that discussion, when a follow up question was asked about the cell phone pilot, she posted that there was a survey open for the pilot. We have confirmed with her that she thought it was apparent that the survey was intended for Arlington parents, especially as the survey asks Arlington-specific demographic questions. While her post was well intentioned, her wording did not highlight who should and should not fill out the survey. She is extremely apologetic about the confusion; nothing nefarious was intended. We want to state extremely clearly that no one outside of Arlington should have filled out the survey, and we will email the Arlington School Board to clarify that was not the intention of the original poster nor us. We stand by our support of the cell phone J-30 draft and feel strongly it can stand on its own without any outside influence. This was an individual error and a mistake and not that of any larger group effort.

They can just lie and pick any school.
