JMU EA is out

I think a lot of schools with the common app have high acceptance rates because it's so easy to apply.

Congrats, OP!! These seem like strong, high stats to me. JMU has an 86% acceptance rate…am I missing something? Not from the DCVM area. Is it much harder to get in now?

Yes, it is much harder to get in now.

Schools get "hot" real quick nowadays. With the Gameday event and basketball winning we were very afraid this could be JMU's year.

I remember JMU being very hot 30 years ago when I was applying.

Same - I remember Virginia Tech being a safety for JMU, which at the time had an acceptance rate around 35% (early 90s). Kids who did not get into UVA or William & Mary, went to JMU; and if they didn't get into JMU, then Virginia Tech.

OR kids got into UVA and (gasp!) chose JMU— myself and two friends included — because it was a great place. There are lots of factors at play for some kids that may not like adults on here obsessed with rankings. Congrats to the new Dukes!

30 years ago, I was admitted to William & Mary, UVA, Virginia Tech, and Duke, but was rejected from JMU. That was a blow to my ego at the time!

When does honors college let the kids know?

Anonymous wrote:Congrats! A top choice for my son in a couple of years. I have a feeling that now that it is nationally ranked the admissions will only get harder (like VT).

Also was new to the Common App last year which also tends to inflate admissions.

Curious. Is it harder to get accepted to JMU if applying for business than arts & sciences. DD’s friend was flat out rejected, which surprised me, I thought he would have at least been deferred. I’m wondering if it could be because he applied for business.

NP. Not sure I understand your question. This was his first choice and he got in, so the OP is sharing the news and celebrating. CONGRATS, OP!!

The thought of going to school in Gainesville kind of makes me puke. Has he ever seen that sorry excuse for a town?

yes, we’ve been to quite a few football games there, we have a 2nd home in St Augustine. it’s actually his first choice. He would have picked any other SEC school over JMU or VT but wants to be close to home, either florida or VA.

and as far as towns I BY FAR think blacksburg is the absolute worst. Not to mention is is sooo dreary.

DP. We love Blacksburg, as does our DC who goes to VT. Classic small college town surrounded by mountains. Different strokes and all that.

WHY is it necessary to post this?

To reassure anxious students and parents during this stressful time. It definitely needs to be said - the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor.

The odds are in your favor if you have a 3.8 or higher, but I’m hearing of a lot of kids with below a 3.8 who have gotten deferred or rejected.

+1
Well put.

Deferred. 3.6 gpa. 1400 sat. Lots of ECs.

I think it will more selective this year. Lots of acceptances in that range over the last few years.

It will never get too hard to get into without an engineering school though.

Nice dismissive post. Also the majority of applicants get into ALL va state schools except W&M and UVA

I have a theory that the "JMU is so easy to get into" poster is really a disgruntled parent whose kid got denied 4 years ago, and now they keep trolling these JMU threads.

Congrats to all admitted students! My son accepted his offer at 3:30 this afternoon!

VT has one a well more than half of applicants get in there.
