I’m glad you are finding some kind of comfort, OP, and legitimately don’t care what anyone wears.
But retconning a hijab as an article of female empowerment is about the same as claiming the confederate flag is just a pretty symbol of the south. |

I don’t have a problem with any “modesty” clothing as long as it’s optional.
The cartoon above is really stupid, because the whole issue here is the punishment for noncompliance. |
If you are framing your experience in terms of how men react, then you are not liberated. |
You do you, but know if you push that crap to me, I'll revolt in full force. |
Yep! An ugly, fat, middle-aged woman IS invisible to society. |
Wow, the racism and anti-Islam sentiment on this board is shocking. I know I shouldn't be surprised given where our culture is, but I guess I expected better from the generally highly educated DC area.
Given our society's attitudes, OP is brave to wear a hijab. I know many women who choose to wear it and they are all lovely, attractive women who have their own personal reasons for their decision. I respect it and think many hijabs are beautiful as fashion accessories. One Muslim woman I know chooses gorgeous fabrics and color combos for her dresses and hijabs. Why can't we just respect others' choices? |
You forgot misogynist too. |
What do you think cultural appropriate is? What do you think a headscarf means? Do you understand what the word "consent" means? |
NP. I think OP is part of a concerted effort to get western women to adopt hijab. Similar posts have been flooding TikTok and Instagram. They tend to feature western women supposedly trying hijab and liking it. I don’t buy that this is just an accident. There’s been enough quasi-identical posts on social media that it’s raising suspicions. |
Meh—OP is not “brave” to wear a hijab in our area. Glad that it makes her feel good and all, but assuming this is in DMV, this isn’t exactly a hostile environment for hijab-wearing females.
It’s akin to flying an LGBTQIA+ flag in a high school counselors office, tbh. Nothing shocking and nothing counter-cultural about it. |
I let my hair go prematurely gray. It works even better than a hijab, you basically become invisible. ![]() |
Plenty of other women turn into slobs who don’t care about their appearance and don’t cover up. Now that’s truly liberating. ![]() |
Just don’t ask your OP friend whether she thinks your “same sex marriage to someone trans” is okay…and your Kumbyah-fest will turn out juuuuuust fine. |
Where abaya is not mandatory, people commonly wear hijab without abaya. |
