Screaming coaches

Screaming coaches joysticking 12 year-old boyz for 60 minutes is how great athletes are made, don't you know?

Gotta feel sorry for the coaches at travel clubs with the bad-news bears teams of kids who are there giving 40% effort and don't even watch the game on tv.
But have parents who are constantly complaining about not winning

Maybe yelling is a substitute for expensive therapy

You feel bad for a bunch of adults that get paid to coach kids to play soccer? (Because of a few complaining parents). LOL

How about a bunch of kids that love playing soccer but get screamed at during practices and games by a bunch of fully grown adults (coaches)?

Interesting paraphrasing

Well, since kids are getting screamed at at games by fully grown adults (parents) who know less than the coach, seems everyone is failing.

Anonymous wrote:There is a fine line between screaming at kids in anger and yelling at kids so they listen and learn. I've coached high school and youth. It's not easy for youth kids to listen and learn. Often, the best coaches have to yell to get kid's attention so they actually learn and develop as players.

Again, it's a fine line. Nothing wrong with yelling as long as the wording is about training and not putting the kid down.

I see this is in travel all the time. What happens is the kids do just enough to not get yelled at but nothing more.

"So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.” - Peter Gibbons

Coaches that scream have no skills.

There is certainly something to this. I wish Coaches, TDOCs, Managers, Refs, whoever had the ability to escort parents off the field. The joysticking, the yelling for a yellow card, the questioning of line calls, etc is only embarrassing your sons and daughters and having them lose standing with their coaches.

A ref threw me out of a game once. The following week at practice I approached the coach and apologized. He told me that it wasn't a problem and that the ref was horrible. So...you don't always lose standing with the coach.

They yell more than any I know including SC at Bethesda. What do you think MJ would say about the subject? Or Tom Brady? Or Tiger Woods? Or Roger Federer? To be the best, you have to know how to take criticism, good and bad. Otherwise, play Rec.

Please explain what makes Solar the most successful club in the US?

How does criticism within itself help to make a player at any sport better?

Ummmm, their record, ECNL Championships and how many players they put into the USYNT system. It's not rocket science.

As for your second question, please ask Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Simone Biles, Carli Lloyd, Raphael Nadal, Michael Phelps, Ronaldo, any Brazilian Futbol player, but would probably defer to Sir Alex Ferguson first. Vince Lombardi is dead so I guess you can ask Bill Belichek or Phil Jackson too. If this list does not sway you, I suggest you check into your local mental hospital for extreme narcissism.

Thanks,

Those are all adults. They can handle being yelled at, although I can assure you that Fed and Nadal never had coaches that needed to yell at them. (Rafael Nadal by the way) Phil Jackson did not yell at players.

No player under the age of 14 should hear a coach screaming at them - before, during, or after a game.

Self confidence is the number one factor for athletes who to get better and be elite. Any of those players listed above will you that.

Youth coaches need to give these young player the blue print and the BELIEF that they can do hard things. Tearing them down won't do that.

Roger Federer would never tolerate that type of coaching. You are a dinosaur making excuses for people who don't know how to coach. Lots of coaches are just figureheads with others who get the work done.

The culture of yelling at young female players is the same culture that accepted other forms of abuse which has been rampant in women's soccer. Young girls broken down and taught not to question a coach.

Stop.

Agreed. Clubs and leagues need to STOP allowing coaches to yelling/screaming at young players. It is abuse!

Easy, cupcake. Every parent can make their own decision. You don’t like a style of coaching? Leave. It’s as simple as that.
