How do you hit 90g of protein daily?

Anonymous
Isn't it not great for the kidneys to eat 90g of protein? What's the science on this recommendation?

Oikos pro greek yogurt - 23 g protein per serving. I mix it with berries for breakfast.

For lunch I have big salad with black beans or edamame, avocado, feta cheese, and assorted veggies. I also add sunflower or pumpkin seeds, if i have them..

Dinner is a lean protein, usually chicken breast, farro as a sub for rice, vegetables, and 1% milk.

Snacks are fruit, string cheese, almonds or other nuts.

I am trying to increase my protein and reduce my calories for weight loss. I try to only eat meat once/day and aim for around 90 g of protein.

It’s not that much really. One chicken breast has about 45g of protein. I’m sure you wouldn’t think twice about having two meals with chicken.

My doctor has recommended I eat 130g of protein a day while I try to lose weight. They have a medical degree and access to my entire medical history including labwork.

I didn't read the entire thing but the easiest way is chicken breast. Least calories for most protein.

I also like shrimp as a snack.

And our good friend tuna in a can or flavored packet.

Fit all those in a day, plus a balanced diet (beans for fiber) and boom, done.

People who body build and athletes, men and women, eat about 1g protein/day/body weight. So if a woman weighs 120, she'll eat that many g protein. It's not bad for the kidneys if other food is eating. What you are thinkin gof is putting your body into ketosis. Paleo diet puts body in ketosis for weight loss and it's hard on the kidneys.

So many ultra processed food suggestions on this thread. Really bad for health.

This recommendation is for someone in ill health to regain muscle. Ask your doctor what is recommended in YOUR situation, not that of OP's relative. Your post is bordering on trolling when OP has spoken of the difficulty of her relative's situation.

My mom has kidney disease from cancer radiation and even in her extreme case she was advised by her nephrologist to have a similar amount of protein to regain strength after a time bedridden for a fracture. In OP's relative's case, they are also on an appetite limiting medication.

Stop trying to derail a thread that OP said has been helpful to them in a hard time.

I would second the suggestion on Greek yogurt. Any of them are great. I am into endurance sports now and I use 0 percent fage to supplement my protein intake without powders etc…you can get 48 ounce tubs at Costco. I buy a six rack at a time.

I’m 175lbs / 70kg (give or take) and 6’ as a man and I have now idea how much protein I intake in a day. I do have Greek yogurt twice and probably at least the 100 cal serving - maybe double that. Each time. Once in the morning with my oatmeal breakfast and again at night as a snack with blueberries, strawberries etc..

You can also consider this for bioavailability:

OP,

I found the info here helpful. There are also lots of recipes.

https://www.dietdoctor.com/high-protein

When my mom was in a similar situation and got tired of eggs or meat she would happily eat this topped with berries. I'd add 1 whole additional egg for the nutrients. Sometimes I'd make it with 1 c canned pumpkin instead of a banana.

You can add things like vanilla, pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon. You can also top with some vanilla Greek yogurt or a little cottage cheese under the berries. It's also good with some chopped sauteed apples, cinnamon and walnuts or pecans. When we had chocolate whey I added a zucchini to the blender instead of the banana for chocolate zucchini pancakes, with added chopped walnuts. I usually double the recipe for the family and sometimes use 1 scoop unflavored and 1 scoop flavored whey. With some chicken sausage or turkey or Canadian bacon on the side it really ups the protein for the day.

For simplicity and to save time we do "scrambled style" pancakes"

https://www.instructables.com/How-to-Make-Scrambled-Pancakes/

I add extra boxed whites to scrambled eggs, omelets, frittatas and used if for the pancakes, it all adds up.

My mom was able to regain then maintain muscle in her 90s after a period of bedrest, despite kidney disease, with the combo of doctor instructed increased protein and PT, then gym time. It takes time and consistency but it really did work, despite the idea that older folks can't gain muscle.

Older people don't process protein as well so I was told to focus more on animal proteins along with increased amount. I'm not a huge processed food person but some whey powder can help, both with reaching the leucine threshold and because liquid calories are not as satiating. I divided the drinks, like you said you were thinking of doing, or she would not eat, saying she was full.

My mom was not on an appetite suppressant and it was still not that easy to get her to eat and eat enough protein, so my heart goes out to you. Your relative is lucky to have you and DH, you sound like lovely, caring people. Don't forget to go for walks, do yoga or whatever is stress relieving for you. As a caregiver don't forget your own oxygen mask. Hope your loved one is on the mend very soon!

I've had relatives that doctors gave them bad info and it spiraled into needing dialysis (in their case, overhydration). Questioning doctors is a good practice especially if they aren't nutritionists.

I try to hit about 120g of protein each day:

Breakfast options: omelet with 184g egg whites from carton with tomatoes, scallions, crumbled feta cheese plus bowl of nonfat greek yogurt (3/4 cup) with blueberries and oatmeal
Kodiak pancakes with side of fruit
scrambled eggs (1 egg plus 184g of egg whites) with 1 slice of Dave's killer bread topped with avocado and nonfat cottage cheese

Lunch options: Turkey sandwich with Dave's Killer Bread
Grilled chicken breast with rice and beans and side salad
Tuna salad sandwich with side salad

Dinner options: Pasta with chicken breast- I like making linguini with sliced chicken, grape tomatoes, lots of garlic, some baby spinach
Grilled salmon with side of rice and sauteed broccoli
Turkey chili with shredded mexican cheese on top and some tortilla chips
Rotisserie chicken with rice and beans and side salad

Snack- Fairlife chocolate protein shake

This. I was trying to go from about 220lbs to 240lbs and needed to consume upwards of 200g of protein a day.

I truly believe its harder to put on (Clean) weight than it is to lose it
