Being sober is boring as hell

I like seltzer water with fresh lime. Or water with lime. More than just one wedge, a good pour of lime juice.

You could also try gummies. Then you won't be bored.

THC gummies? Those are way worse than alcohol, do not even go there.

They are in no way “way worse” than alcohol. The body is equipped with an endocannabinoid system. Alcohol is just a neurotoxin (and a carcinogen).

THC is used for valid medical purposes, including managing addiction. Please educate yourself.

It’s just so boring! I know I need to pickup some hobbies, but how long does this last? I’ve been trying to cut back, with varying success for about a year. I have a terrible attitude about quitting when I don’t want to quit.

Anyone who’s BTDT have any idea how long this lasts? I’ve been mostly alcohol-free for more than 2 weeks.

That just confirms you are an alcoholic.

Life's boring without booze? Seriously? I think you should probably go to AA ASAP.

OP already stopped drinking. AA will only add additional boredom.

You don’t have even an infinitesimal inkling what you’re talking about. AA is not for everybody, but for some people it provides a badly needed social network of fellow non-drinkers glad to support a fellow person in recovery. AA meetings are filled with laughter, unbelievable stories, and a lot of authentic feelings. If somebody announces in an AA meeting that they’re bored, they won’t be bored long.

AA rooms are also filled with narcissists and sexual predators.

+1. One of the best ways to relieve boredom and loneliness is to get involved with a group of like-minded individuals and help the less fortunate. Soup kitchen work is great. Food Bank work too.

You need a therapist that specializes in mourning and loss.

Since this was a suicide you also have PTSD and should treat trauma with DBT.

The Wendy center is the best place for this.

Get help, you are not an alcoholic yet but once you are the addiction will be way tougher to break than it is now.

This times 1000. OP, I’m sorry for your loss. Good for you for stopping the alcohol for two weeks.

If you’re speaking from personal experience, I can’t debate what happened to you, except to say you were in the wrong room and there are plenty of others. (And that “filled” seems a gross and argumentative exaggeration in any event.)

If you’re not speaking from experience you should stop discouraging people by repeating calumny that might wall them off from the help they need.

People die of alcohol misuse. Discouraging them from something that might help because something bad “might” happen virtually guarantees that something bad will happen — they will remain isolated in their disease until it kills them.

Ugh, wrong. TCH is a psychoactive drug and continuous use can lead to psychosis. Gummies are poorly regulated and contain very high amounts of THC. Stop making it sound like it's a medicinal herb and its effects is like drinking chamomile tea If you are talking about medicinal applications of hemp plant and CBD and other beneficial cannabinoids processed specifically for medicinal purposes, that's very different than recreational gummies which purpose is really to get you high (or relaxed) or whatever. It's not different than alcohol in the way it's used. But its far easier to overdose on it and get horrible side effects prompting ambulance call than alcohol poisoning, which takes time and a LOT of drinks. All you need is one gummy and you feel like you are dying, and it can last for hours of hell.

Encouraging people with a drug (alcohol) problem to switch to a different drug is a terrible idea. IIRC that’s how heroin came about.

Cannabis/THC has no standard strength, no standard dosing, no standard purity, no manufacturing standards, is not generally recognized as sage for any condition, is not generally recognized as effective for any condition, and I don’t think even pharmaceutical THC is approved for any condition.

“Medical” marijuana is a fraud and always was a fraud, foisted on the gullible to garner support for unrestricted recreational use.

OP feeling like you need alcohol in order to not be bored fades over time. That's the alcoholism talking. By one month, that had faded a lot into the background.

No advice except to say - yeah, it’s boring. Do you have a lot of underlying trauma? This is a good time to confront and process that.

Again, if you had a bad personal experience, there’s no arguing with what happened to you in your case. But if you’re simply repeating calumny because the idea of people getting help in a way you don’t approve of offends you, you should keep your ideas to yourself.

AA is a fellowship composed of millions of people worldwide, who get together in at least multiple thousands of essentially independent meetings every day. Covid hastened the advent of even international meetings that people can attend via Zoom.

AA isn’t for everybody. Those who don’t like it should try something else and are free to recommend that if it works for them, as DCUM posters regularly do.

Thank you, and totally agree. It's in no way better than alcohol and can lead to terrible addiction and also poisoning symptoms that make hangover feel like a spa day. "self medicating" your alcoholism with other feel-good OTC legal substances (and especially illegal) is a terrible and dangerous idea. There are medical approaches to this done under medical supervision and with strict dosing for people with severe addictions that can't be resolved with at will abstaining and group support alone. But going to your local licensed cannabis shop isn't it unless you are looking for CBD gummies.

“Medical” marijuana actually undergoes stringent QA, unlike recreational marijuana. The distinction is there for a reason.

What is it that you do when you drink alcohol that is so exciting?

I got into endurance sports. Drinking makes me feel horrendous and my sleep is terrible. So if I drink even wine and beer it makes workouts and spending time with my friends very suboptimal. I’d much rather go for an epic bike ride and a run early on Saturday morning then drink and eat poorly on Friday night.
