Yeah, they were initially planning to move on him about a week later, they were convening a grand jury, etc., but it got leaked. Since they were monitoring his online activity, they knew he was closely following the investigation and were worried he would get wind and flee. His wife is from Iceland which made him an even greater flight risk. |
Forgot to circle back to my point, which is that I'm sure they would have ideally arrested him in Suffolk County but had to move on it quickly. |
Wow, I didn’t know that. She definitely sounded out of it on the audio, but still aware enough to give info, except address. What could the two men in the home given her that wouldn’t be detected? |
death penalty case |
There is no death penalty in NY. |
Np if there’s murder across state lines? Or in the other states where he had homes and suspected murders? |
He is egocentric. Claims he’s doing a public service by killing sex workers. See: peace officer post. |
Wow, the story of the investigation is fascinating.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/07/14/us/rex-heuermann-gilgo-beach-court-document.html It seems like the big break is that when he first met one of his victims, a boyfriend was there (they were pulling a con of sorts). He witnessed the guy’s car. And since he used the same phone the next day to contact her again, they looked for guys with that car. Then once the car made him a suspect, they were able to track the location of all of his burner phones and all his online activities. Then they got discarded DNA from him and his wife and did some fancy mitochondrial stuff with hairs found on the victims. His wife wasn’t there but it sounds like they think her hair was. I’m sure they’re hoping they’ll find more evidence now that they can search his house. I hope they do too. |
The crazy part of this for me is that he knew the boyfriend had seen him. He could have just moved on and found another victim, or at least gotten a new burner phone. It’s because of his carelessness that they finally got him. Thankfully. |
Does NY even have life without parole? |
Does it really matter? If you can stack up life sentences. Plus eligible for parole doesn’t mean you get it. |
Yes, it does. |
Ok, great. Thanks! |
There are some crimes so heinous that parole should never be an option at all. Ever. |
Fun fact, My husband went to college with with him and said he was odd even then. |
