Do conservatives want to ban transgenderism for the same reasons they want to ban abortion?

And we’ve weaponized the issue politically to stifle any meaningful discussion. It’s a mess and I fear we’re doing great damage to young people.

Exactly.
And, the fact that the number of our youth identifying as trans has grown pretty rapidly pretty darn quickly is quite concerning.
Is it really gender dysphoria? Or a need to "fit in?" Or some type of mental distress? Or a fad? Or an unhealthy push by a small group of people to impact society?

No, OP. They are just using transgender people as scapegoats for all of the things they don’t like. Not the same kind of issues but it does share some legal questions about the ability of the state to interfere in medical decisions.

Thought experiment - let’s say that all of a sudden The NY Times started writing puff pieces about anorexia every other day - how cool and brave it is - and doctors started quickly recommending stomach stapling and drugs for kids with any kind of eating issue whatsoever - and parents who disagreed were attacked for being anorexiphobes - and Target started running ad campaigns for clothing that makes skinny people look fat

Pretty much no one “hates” anorexics - but many people might feel uncomfortable seeing it marketed as just one equally valid lifestyle among many that healthy people might choose to pursue

It’s just about hurting the right people, or owning the libs.

This was the rallying cry when they banned gender affirming care in Indiana even though no transgender surgeries were being performed on minors in the state. That’s how you know legislators are lying about their motivations. They banned puberty blockers which some kids need & which reduce suicide and self-harm. But right-wing legislators only wanted to talk about nonexistent surgeries.

I’m not Christian. The PP is right. I speak from someone with experience, who has a kid groomed by an online therapist - my kid was just over 18.

They weren’t a kid and they weren’t groomed.

If the church went in and talked your child into being a Christian most here would be up in arms about it.

Not if my “child” were over 18.

Doesn’t make it better or worse by age. Ask any parent whose kid is on the spectrum to some degree. There is usually drugs involved as well, especially pot, and it’s really strong now.

What are you suggesting here? Parents have the rights to veto gender transition of their kids at any age?

Lol you have no legal control over your 25 year old. Sorry.

NP. 100% absolutely yes. It would never happen at my house.

The question was about kids, fool. Try to follow the conversation

You should try to follow it. It started with an earlier poster complaining that her 18+ year old child had been “groomed.” And when a poster asked if parents should be able to veto transition at “any age,” you replied yes.

If an 18 YO was groomed it most likely started in middle school. Or before

Not true. It was during Covid when online therapists from other states could hock their services across state lines.

Puberty blockers are not approved by the FDA to treat gender dysphoria, their impact on brain development is largely unknown, they can unleash a host of side effects — the extent of most are not fully understood, yet they’re doled out like candy to thousands of children. Regardless of one’s views of gender identity, this approach is flat out wrong.

I'm so old, I remember when selling health insurance across state lines was basically the Republicans' only solution to the lack of affordable health care.

You sound like the COVID anti-vaxxers who were full of shit too.

In any case, the people pushing the legislation in Indiana weren't talking about the FDA -- it was all fearmongering about child mutilation.

Wait, you’re blaming the New York Times for promoting gender transitioning? They’re doing the opposite and have published half a dozen huge articles freaking out about it.

Nice job parenting here if that’s true. Maybe look in the mirror on this.

So the only way to not be a Nazi is to be in favor of performing sex changing surgeries on minors?

What someone wears under their graduation gown has no effect on you.

Forcing my kids to “accept” and “celebrate “ this a absolutely has effect on me

Famously, everyone must take their kids to Pride. It’s the law.

Pretty hard to avoid the in your face aspect of it

awe do you need protection from others? So your solution is to restrict the rights of others so you don’t have to be “confronted”by them?

I hate mullets. Would prefer to never see them. Would never ever say people don’t have the right to style their hair however they want.

You seem to feel differently.

If it’s something I or my kids are forced to do, such as the idiotic display of pronouns at a work conference, or attending a “pride” rally at school, then yes, we have the right to opt out with no repercussions

No one is forcing your daughters to wear pants or your sons to wear dresses. Keep up.

And if you don’t want your kid to attend a pride rally keep them home.

The pronouns thing just makes me giggle. And I don’t display mine. But if I were asked to it’s not a big enough deal for me to get so riled up about it.

Do you always giggle when ask to conform to sheer lucancy? What an odd reaction

I thought you supported “parents rights”? Maybe just let parents figure out what is best for their kids. None of your business

THAT is all you took from PPs well reasoned post?
