Yeah I was shocked to learn that Jim Bob failed to win a state senate seat in Arkansas. He’s basically the Trump-loving MAGA base distilled to its purest form and yet he still lost in one of the most conservative states in the U.S. How did that happen?

I’m fairly sure he lost the primary, so it’s not like he lost to a liberal democrat.

He did lose the primary. It’s easy to lose a primary when you’re running for office while your son is on trial for possessing child sexual abuse material.

I remember when Jill and Derrick left the show. Derrick had made some remarks about a trans child from a different TLC show. It seemed odd to gloss over that, and make it sound like it was completely Jill and Derrick’s choice to leave, because I think (or at least there was heavy speculation) that their departure was related to that.

As another poster pointed out, “some of the TLC contracts were signed by her parents and she was listed as a minor even though she was not a minor anymore.”

If true that is INSANITY for a billion dollar company like Discovery to be signing contracts obligating people who are no longer minors that are still calling them minors.

What's not explained, IMO, is how prevalent spanking was and is. Clearly the IBLP facilitates abuse, but this is only possible because abuse is so normalized in our society.

Yeah I remember BITD of the show that everyone called her “Fame-y” and it was obvious that she was trying to build a career off her appearances on it but I really did appreciate her perspective and that of her mother in this. And the Holts! Could have had much more from the Holts. I thought it was really interesting that everyone who was married was interviewed together alongside their spouses. I wanted to hear more from the one young couple who married as teens while in the movement and now we’re both out of it and still together. Sounds like that would be a good story.

I'm almost through the second episode, and as someone who casually watched some of the early Duggar shows, I think there's a lot of new information. Or at least, a lot of context around their religious beliefs. Freaking "eye traps" just about killed me.

As someone who hatewatched the show and the early specials when they were originally on and read the comments on TWOP and other TV forums, I didn’t learn much that was new except the Generation Joshua stuff. However this really did a great job of pulling everything together and presenting it. Long overdue IMO - someone could have done the rest of this without Jill years ago. It looks like Jinger is breaking free as well with the book but maybe not in time to appear in this.

Also yes the Generation Joshua stuff is terrifying and having followed Cawthorn fairly closely - I even knew he went to Patrick Henry - I can’t believe I didn’t make the connection to these crazies. I would watch a whole documentary just with that former SCOTUS clerk guy.

What? Episode two was horrible and hard to watch. It very clearly discusses the abuse: blanket training, “encouragement”, and modeled how to hit the child and then smile and hug. The part about the woman struggling with her 14 MONTH OLD was horrible.

Apparently one of the younger boys did legit lose an election to a democrat though so maybe there’s hope?

+1 More details on that here from an article in the wake of the Turpin family case - the 13 kids whose parents abused them horrifically. I don’t know if there was an ATI/IBLP connection with them but they were Pentecostal and if it looks like a Duggar and walks like a Duggar, chances are it’s a Duggar.

I don’t hate the family at all. I feel sorry for most of them (not Josh or Jim Bob though). And I feel scared about the ways the culture they endorse has the potential to injure people.

How, exactly would progressive Christians effectively "push back" against evangelicals? They consider us misguided heathens and wouldn't listen to us any more than they would listen to Muslims. A theocracy is infiltrating our legislature, our laws, our medical care, and and our schools. It's becoming very hard to tell what kind of Christian is what. Right now, Christianity is taking over and most everyone isn't going to stop to ask what kind you might be. Are you out there fighting this? If not- why not. If you are, what are you doing to stop it?

Or don’t. Like I said, I just don’t want to hear people complaining about “Christian bashing” when we complain about the evangelicals, because basically evangelicals appear to be the mainstream form of Christianity in 2023 and those people deserve to be bashed.

The Duggars do not represent mainstream Christianity, they are part of the quiver full movement that is more like a cult
Evangelicals do not oppose contraception, neither do the Catholics, despite what the pope says

Many sects in conservative Protestant Christianity oppose birth control. As does the Catholic Church.
