This. I don't blame police. Theft under $1,500 is a misdemeanor in MD. No weapons were used, and no one was hurt. The perps left. This is not considered a "priority" call because it's a misdemeanor theft of property with no injuries. Meanwhile, they did have a priority call (suicidal teen) where life was at risk.

And let's say they were caught. Will the prosecutor actually press charges? Will they actually get locked up? Not over a misdemeanor theft charge.

Traffic stops are a great way to get guns and drugs off the street. Jawando claims too many people of certain races are getting arrested due to this... without ever commenting about if these arrests were warranted (they were, or MCPD would be sued for false arrest).

Yes, there is a lack of diversity and equity in who police arrest, but that's because there's a lack of equity and diversity in who commits crimes. Maybe we should teach elderly Asian females how to hotwire a car!

Police have largely adopted a "clean up crew" mentality. They have less interest in dealing with criminals these days. The criminals are more brazen, more mentally ill and on stronger drugs than ever before putting them at a greater risk than ever before. Meanwhile, you'll have a dozen people filming their every interaction looking for a social media gotcha with firing and jail time possible. Then even when they do arrest people, they are back on the streets in a day.

So what is even the point?

In other words, police are getting paid to do nothing because they hate the fact that they have to be held accountable for their conduct.

Btw how many police officers in Montgomery County have gotten fired or gone to jail for misconduct on the job? I'll wait.

The unfortunate reality is that policing doesn't work when its done in a way that is above reproach. Not enough people are willing to engage in risky encounters on the daily when the things can go wrong for them so many ways.

Its easy to criticize the police, but no one here is going to leave a cushy office job to show them how its done right. How many people here could keep their cool after they've been punched/spit on/bit and suddenly they've got hands in their pockets? Now add 10 people surrounding you with phones and jawing at you. No one wants to deal with that.

You're acting like the standard that people are expecting of police is really high, when in fact folks just want police to stop harassing and killing innocent people. These incidents are not cases of police being harassed and then losing their cool. Don't be so disrespectful.

The type of people that can walk the beat, keep their cool and not get themselves shot in the process won't do police work in any great number. So you get what you can get for the low pay and high risk. None of the "do better" posters around here will leave cushy office jobs to show them how its done. So you either deal with a police force that hangs back, or a police force that's going to go too far now and then. Pick your poison.

You are presenting a false dichotomy that is easily disproven by statistics. Corrupt police are criminals just like any other. If police can pick and choose which laws to obey then why not the same for all citizens? You are basically promoting fascism.

I worked at peoples/cbs early 1990s in derwood and a couple came in with shopping carts loaded it up and walked out of the store with it

My local goldsmith/jewelry/pawn shop does this. What a world!

CVS would never do it, but it is possible to be done in a non-discriminatory way. You just need clear race-neutral guidelines, such as:

-- No oversized purses or shopping bags

-- No duffel bags or backpacks

-- Face masks must be removed briefly upon entry to the store, and you must look at a camera with the mask off (FYI, this is a requirement at Maryland casinos and is strictly enforced)

Wouldn't be a perfect solution, but would probably be somewhat of a deterrent.
