All the Dems in the rockville courthouse state that daily to juries and cases. Go sit in a few hours. |
This is gonna blow your mind but I’m a Democrat, and I’m sick of crime and how tolerant we have become a crime. |
Well you'd damn well better start voting that way. The fact that there is all this hand-wringing that crime (gasp) has now come to Bethesda!! would be laughable if it wasn't so sad. You hypocrites were leading the way in the rallies just a few years ago - remember? |
This. I don't blame police. Theft under $1,500 is a misdemeanor in MD. No weapons were used, and no one was hurt. The perps left. This is not considered a "priority" call because it's a misdemeanor theft of property with no injuries. Meanwhile, they did have a priority call (suicidal teen) where life was at risk. And let's say they were caught. Will the prosecutor actually press charges? Will they actually get locked up? Not over a misdemeanor theft charge. Then, how would you feel as a cop if Council members want to do things like limit police's ability to perform traffic stops, like Jawando and Mink propose: https://montgomeryperspective.com/2023/02/24/jawando-and-mink-introduce-bill-to-limit-traffic-stops/ Traffic stops are a great way to get guns and drugs off the street. Jawando claims too many people of certain races are getting arrested due to this... without ever commenting about if these arrests were warranted (they were, or MCPD would be sued for false arrest). Yes, there is a lack of diversity and equity in who police arrest, but that's because there's a lack of equity and diversity in who commits crimes. Maybe we should teach elderly Asian females how to hotwire a car! |

The proposed FY24 budget, that will raise our property taxes about 10%, includes no increase in staffing of police officers out on the street:
https://montgomeryperspective.com/2023/03/22/is-elrich-hiring-more-cops/ Spending will go up, but basically at the same rate as other departments in the county, to keep up with inflation. |
Well then you are repeating partisan talking points. The police budget has gone up. Overall crime is down. Look at the data. |
The type of people that can walk the beat, keep their cool and not get themselves shot in the process won't do police work in any great number. So you get what you can get for the low pay and high risk. None of the "do better" posters around here will leave cushy office jobs to show them how its done. So you either deal with a police force that hangs back, or a police force that's going to go too far now and then. Pick your poison. |
12 carjackings in the first 3 months o f this year, just in Wheaton: https://moco360.media/2023/03/17/12-carjackings-and-a-shooting-at-wheaton-mall-have-residents-fearful/ So last year it was even higher then? |
You are presenting a false dichotomy that is easily disproven by statistics. Corrupt police are criminals just like any other. If police can pick and choose which laws to obey then why not the same for all citizens? You are basically promoting fascism. |
| I worked at peoples/cbs early 1990s in derwood and a couple came in with shopping carts loaded it up and walked out of the store with it |

Maybe CVS and all retailers should just be locked and individual customers be buzzed in at manager discretion.
My local goldsmith/jewelry/pawn shop does this. What a world! |
The discrimination claims will come in on day 1, after a law-abiding young man wearing a hoodie and a face mask is denied entry. |
Are you under the impression that crime levels are based purely on carjackings? Let me prove it to you. Montgomery county crime rate per 100,000 people: 2020: 1,571.5 2010: 2,293.7 2000: 3,153.9 1990: 4,027.5 1980: 5,482.4 Now tell me has MoCo become more or less politically progressive over that time period? I have lives here that whole time so you can’t fool me. I’m so sick of you MoCo bashing liars. |
Source, and 2021 and 2022 data? The word was shut down in 2020 so no surprise crime went down during a lockdown. Most peopel care about violent crimes like carjackings, robberies, and homiciides. How are those doing 2023 vs 2022? |
CVS would never do it, but it is possible to be done in a non-discriminatory way. You just need clear race-neutral guidelines, such as: -- No oversized purses or shopping bags -- No duffel bags or backpacks -- Face masks must be removed briefly upon entry to the store, and you must look at a camera with the mask off (FYI, this is a requirement at Maryland casinos and is strictly enforced) Wouldn't be a perfect solution, but would probably be somewhat of a deterrent. |
