No, they were looking for a suicidal teenager, whom they found after an extensive search and then took to the hospital. They probably saved a young life. Lay off the people doing work and save your criticism for the people who think we should have fewer police.

I was referring to the fact that police are often not acting due to county forces that govern them.

Because lots of crimes no longer get reported, and even if they do get reported, police don't write them up at all or don't write them up correctly. One example:

Most of the stuff I now buy at CVS has a small sticker saying CVS and the store number. It looks like a price sticker, but it doesn't really peel off. Maybe these stores don't do that? Or maybe the thieves know which items don't have the stickers?

For your reference concerning staffing. The district in which this occurred is normally staffed with 8 officers and 1 supervisor. That area covers from 16th street in Silver Spring to the river and from Western Ave to Montrose Road. It also includes Potomac out to Piney Meeting House Rd. Also this call would not have been dispatched priority as it would be a theft not a robbery, therefore lights and sirens would not be authorized. It’s also unlikely that a pursuit would be authorized based on the offense and if one was it would have to terminate at the county line.

Police have largely adopted a "clean up crew" mentality. They have less interest in dealing with criminals these days. The criminals are more brazen, more mentally ill and on stronger drugs than ever before putting them at a greater risk than ever before. Meanwhile, you'll have a dozen people filming their every interaction looking for a social media gotcha with firing and jail time possible. Then even when they do arrest people, they are back on the streets in a day.

So what is even the point?

In other words, police are getting paid to do nothing because they hate the fact that they have to be held accountable for their conduct.

Btw how many police officers in Montgomery County have gotten fired or gone to jail for misconduct on the job? I'll wait.

The unfortunate reality is that policing doesn't work when its done in a way that is above reproach. Not enough people are willing to engage in risky encounters on the daily when the things can go wrong for them so many ways.

Its easy to criticize the police, but no one here is going to leave a cushy office job to show them how its done right. How many people here could keep their cool after they've been punched/spit on/bit and suddenly they've got hands in their pockets? Now add 10 people surrounding you with phones and jawing at you. No one wants to deal with that.

You're acting like the standard that people are expecting of police is really high, when in fact folks just want police to stop harassing and killing innocent people. These incidents are not cases of police being harassed and then losing their cool. Don't be so disrespectful.

But just to be clear then, you agree that the police could forcibly arrest the POSs that were stealing all that stuff from the CVS, right?

That's an inequitable outcome. The people not robbing CVS aren't going to be arrested. Why should theives expect a different outcome from visiting a CVS?

Robbers and thieves are the reason everything goes in locks and you've to get an employee to get it out so you can look at it and then if you don't want it, it makes employee grumpy and you feeling guilty even though its their job and your right. Whole shopping experience gets ruined for everyone.

Also, too many robberies and thefts make companies close their stores and everyone suffers by not having easy access to necessities. Life is already busy and stressful, having to walk 30 min or taking metro/Uber to a pharmacy is a real inconvenience.

I saw a marked car parked in the Sumner Place shopping center..maybe MCPD is starting to move in the right direction.

Staging a car near these soft targets could dramatically deter crime and it's a low cost, easy fix!

Just last year many beats in this district had two cars, and every shift had at least one roving car and one corporal in addition to the sergeant. The plainclothes unit and the traffic unit were also better staffed.
