I wouldn’t. If the airline is showing it it’s fair game. I may fast forward but I’m watching what I want. Sorry if you deem it in appropriate. That’s your problem

Mom of 3.

Well yeah, I would be considerate in that situation and you would not. We all make our own choices.

Do you expect everyone on the plane to watch Toy Story in case a kid looks up from their Nintendo?

Yes. I oppose watching nudity or graphic violence on airplanes so everybody much watch only animated films. Thank you for articulating my opinion so clearly.

So don’t watch nudity or graphic violence on an airplane. Pretty easy to just.. not watch.
Anonymous
wow, I think it was inappropriate that it was available, kids and adults alike shouldn’t have to have a public viewing of highly sexual or violent material. AND that should come from the industry level, not the job of those flying or the flight attendants to mediate. So I agree the man watching was within the right to do so, but…..the airlines really ought to do better.

So you don't think we should all just watch Toy Story. There aren't a lot of non-animated films that don't have some amount of violence and/or nudity (though less nudity these days). What is your acceptable level? Are Marvel movies too violent for your delicate sensibilities? How about John Wick?

What if the woman is breastfeeding in a scene and you can see everything - is that ok, it's just early 2000s-style HBO nudity that's unacceptable?

Please list off some movies that you would find acceptable for an adult to watch on an airplane.

I mean, there is a big difference between seeing a diagram of a naked body in an anatomy textbook and watching a spicy scene in a movie. I would have been much more chill about it than that mom (her reaction was wild) but I can definitely see why it bothered her.

I think the mom was wrong but I think most people would turn it off if they realized a kid could see it, so the man sounds a bit of an arse. However, if the mom was handling it badly he probably decided he wasn't going to play ball with the crazy lady.

When I am watching a movie on a flight I forward through sex/violent scenes.

How about you go in the other direction? Sopranos is okay, right? What about everything in White Lotus? Game of Thrones? Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Straight-up p***?

I imagine we both think that not everything is okay to be consumed publicly. If you really wanted to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre on an airplane but you know there is a 7-year old behind you who could see it, I do hope you'd just decide to hold off.

Personally I am pro-breastfeeding in public so we can get ride of the idea that breasts in any context are sexual, but that's neither here no there.

Wait you don't think someone should even watch White Lotus on a plane? Can you go back and tell me if Marvel violence is ok? Is this essentially a standard where if you like something it's ok, and if you don't like it it's not ok?

I agree that it's not always easy to find the line between straight up p**n and sexual imagery in a film or show that isn't p**n. But I think most of us can recognize the difference when we see it - and I think especially if someone is doing what you do when watching p**n on the plane, that's clearly not acceptable.

I guess the thing is that the don't be a jerk rule applies - but I'm not sure the guy was the one being the jerk here. Sure he could have turned off the show, or fast forwarded through the scene. But I don't think it's reasonable for adults, who are on a plane, to have to live as if we're all traveling with a toddler.

Too bad.

Yeah, but mom wouldn’t have complained about violence. Only sex. We’ve really got it completely ass-backwards in this country.

What if someone sets up their laptop or iPad to watch hard core porn or an X rated movie (eg, the cook the thief his wife and her lover). Are there rules about viewing content on personal devices in public?

I was asking you about White Lotus, not saying I don't think people should watch it on a plane, but yeah, there are scenes in white lotus I would not watch in public and I'd fast-forward them. I don't remember anything in marvel movies but if there was violence and a child was around, yes, I'd fast-forward.

I don't really expect anybody to do anything, I just definitely would myself, and I really think the airlines should go back to editing things.

I didn't focus a lot on the mom in my original comment because I think she was being so completely out of line that it was obvious that she behaved really poorly.

My toddler is terrified TERRIFIED of the little mermaid. I say no Disney movies on planes.

Of course it is. Porn is the graphic depiction of actual sex acts. There was no actual sex in the Sopranos, or the White Lotus, for that matter. No genitals were on display, and the actors were not engaged in coitus.

I have 100% watched Game of Thrones on a flight before and never thought twice about it.

She didn’t handle it correctly but if you think the problem with The Sopranos is a boob, you’ve never watched it. No 8 year old should be watching that.

He was a jerk for saying no to her.
