| My SIL in California is friends with him (met him through his cousin). She says he’s a very nice guy but has a long standing substance abuse issue with prescription drugs and has really struggled. he’s in rehab, he’s clean, then he releases, rinse, repeat. She feels incredibly sorry for him, especially for all that lost potential. |
Touche. Point taken. |
Same reason why he got mega famous and rich with middling acting skills. Same reason he stayed fit and handsome. Pact with the devil. |
Crazy thing to say about someone who experienced a lot of tragedy in his life and always go out of his way to treat women respectfully. |
High grand chief has spoken! |
Keanu Reeves, while not the greatest actor, has donated tons of money to cancer charities. He fights for workers’ on film sets to be compensated fairly and often takes low level staff to lunch. He is a genuinely a nice guy. You know what Keanu hasn’t done? Written a navel-gazing book putting other actors in a negative light. |

I think the Reeves stuff is a little weird, too. It sounds almost like he's ruminating, but to repeat it then twice makes it odd (especially given a editor must have read this). Reeves and River Phoenix were supposedly really close friends, and there are plenty of stories that Reeves was really devastated by Phoenix's death, and I wonder if there isn't something in that dynamic leftover - that Perry and Phoenix were friends, and Reeves and Phoenix were friends, and Perry is holding some sort of long grudge/anger over Phoenix's death that he blames on Reeves in some form or fashion.
As a PP points out, it's almost a passive aggressive insult to Reeves that could be taken in a couple of different ways, none flattering, but also not specific. |
| I found the comments very strange as well. Who knows the real backstory. Also remember that River was only 23 when he died! What would he have become had he lived? Maybe another lifelong addict like Matthew Perry. I'm convinced people with substance abuse issues are often frozen at the age and maturity level at which they become addicted. Add millions of dollars to the mix and what's the incentive to truly be well? |
Good point. I’m the one who posted the link to the book excerpt upthread, and when I saw Perry’s quote, it immediately came to mind even though I read the article several years ago. I think there is definitely some lingering resentment over River Phoenix’s death all these years later and I don’t believe it was an accident that Perry would call out Reeves specifically. How all of these things are intertwined is anyone’s guess though. |
Yeah I took Perry’s point to be about acting talent, and lack thereof. |
Not true, more like 1-2 years. |
or maybe they remain sober 30 + years sober here. recovery works |
As someone who has been sober for decades, you are probably well positioned to note that Perry hasn't been sober long enough to be speaking with any authority or perspective since he's been sober for less than 2 years. |
Ok, but you've just defined "up." |
| M. Perry just released a comment about the Keanu Reeves mentions, saying he just pulled a name for no reason, it was a mistake and he should have used his own name. Sounds like he was trying to make a joke and it didn't work. |
