Now he seems like he’s constantly reminding himself it’s not his fault and seemingly trying to find purpose by helping others with his story/book. My takeaway is he’s still struggling inside his head.

He basically said his life would have been completely different had he never taken that one painkiller.

I think he means he wonders about what could have been: wife and kids, movie career, his health, etc.

It’s very sad.

I watched the interview also, and it is definitely a sad story. I hope he can achieve sobriety.

I am kind of surprised that his people didn't help him select a more flattering outfit. It looked like a suit jacket hastily thrown over an old t-shirt and jeans.

He needs a wife who cares.

This. Plus he looks like absolute shit. If he had 9 million to spend on getting sober, I think he can pony up 500k to fix his face and body.

When you've spent months fixing your colon, maybe plastic surgery isn't a high priority.

Wow - that's what you are focused on? The guy is just happy to still be alive and then jerks like you are criticizing his looks. How would YOU look like if you went through 30+ years of hardcore drug and alcohol addiction? GTFOOH.

But putting out a memoir is? Perhaps he should speak with Robert Downey, Jr, who appeared to be a lost cause but has managed to stay sober for some time now?

I watched the Diane Sawyer interview. It’s easy to feel sorry for Perry. I hope he continues on his sober journey.

My thoughts.
-His mother remarried when Perry was young. His stepfather is Keith Morrison, the journalist from Dateline.
- Diane Sawyer looks the same. Does this woman not age?

I also watched the interview and agree it is easy to feel sorry for him. He lost 3 decades of his life to addiction. 30ish years just gone, poof! while friends and peers (and even Chandler) moved on with relationships, children, and career opportunities. (Also agree about Diane Sawyer!)

Yes, he had good looks, number one comedy, 20 million a year salary in reruns, on Raya (even when engaged) and pick up any girl he wants. Yeah, I feel sorry for him - NOT!

Huh? Whatever do you mean? Putting out a memoir isn't elective surgery and wouldn't seem to pose unnecessary risks to his physical health, unlike cosmetic surgery.

I wouldn't wish that life on any woman.

Totally agree w/ both points. I feel terribly sorry for Matthew Perry. He seems earnest and without attitude or ego.

Money and fame don't make people happy or healthy. Sure money takes away financial stress but it doesn't take away the struggles of being human.

That is the hard thing for anyone with significant mental illness or addiction. It is really hard to find a healthy partner as most healthy adults don't want to take on the challenges.

That is why so many end up with partners who are also ill or who have struggled with addiction. That can be good for understanding each other but often also contributes to really unhealthy dynamics.

Random question but given how long he was on drugs and to what extent, how did he even pull together this memoir? Not about the writing/crafting the story but how does he even have the info to include? Was he writing in journals?

Do you feel sorry for someone battling cancer? It's well documented that this is in fact a disease.
