That's how addicts are when they're sober. It makes them endearing and maybe you stick around for their next relapse.
or maybe they remain sober

30 + years sober here. recovery works

As someone who has been sober for decades, you are probably well positioned to note that Perry hasn't been sober long enough to be speaking with any authority or perspective since he's been sober for less than 2 years.

and i know he is sober today to the best of my knowledge and I will take that, hopefully tomorrow as well. hopefully, I will be sober as well. day by day.

I think it’s weird too. You can interpret it a couple ways, both unflattering. Is he saying Keanu was just as abusive with drugs and alcohol but someone managed to avoid death? Or is he saying why are these great talents gone and a no-talent like Reeves is still around? Both? Either way it’s an unnecessary shot. Keanu is pretty much well liked by everyone and still is considered an A-lister. His movies do well. This doesn’t make Perry look too good.

This is the way I read it.

Honestly, it just seems like regular old-school jealously on Perry's part. Keanu Reeves is still hot as hell and genuinely universally liked. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a personal back story like Perry was up for a role that went to Reeves.

That’s how I read it too, I’m the one who first posted the Variety tweet. If he said it’s unfair that Reeves AND ME are still around when Phoenix and Ledger are dead it would have been fine, but it doesn’t seem like he did.

I also blame the ghost writer and editor who should have caught the repeat. Perry probably didn’t realize he had said it once already. It’s not like he’s tolstoy pouring over every word he’s written. (Actually tolstoys wife did a lot of that.)

Agreed. It also sounds very self-important, like acting skills are the only measure for who should live or die.

Yeah, his editor really messed up.

I’d rather hang with Perry than op who sounds judgemental and neausating. I’d have no problem with someone that is trying to beat an addiction. Op sounds horrible

ABC is airing a Diane Sawyer interview with him tomorrow night. They played some clips of it on GMA today. I think he said he had detoxed 65 times and been in rehab 14 times. (I might have those numbers wrong, relying on memory.) That's a lot! I hope he is able to stay sober this time, but I found it interesting that he did not want to disclose his sobriety date/timeline.

It seems like I vaguely remember him discussing his addiction in the past and talking about how he turned his home into a recovery house for addicts. I guess that didn't work out.

Despite all the news about opioid addiction and overuse, I've never heard of the consequences he suffered (colon bursting).

Yeah. Addicts/recovering addicts should not hang out together.

I don't think he is. But this comment MP made about him seemed very unncessary and petty. If he threw Jennifer Aniston or another cast member under the bus, that would make sense because he worked with them for years. No one associates Keanu and MP together - they might have been in a movie together decades ago or been friends but it's not a well known pair so it seems weird.

Because no one has ever said a bad word about him, and he seems like a genuinely good guy, maybe? Why would you trash a guy who is best known but being really nice?

Obviously, there are only snippets. But Keanu was only a drug addict back in the time period River died. And insulting Keanu is kind of punching up. Punching up used to be acceptable, now we punch down.

Keanu Reeves, while not the greatest actor, has donated tons of money to cancer charities. He fights for workers’ on film sets to be compensated fairly and often takes low level staff to lunch. He is a genuinely a nice guy.

You know what Keanu hasn’t done? Written a navel-gazing book putting other actors in a negative light.

Ok, but you've just defined "up."

How about not punching? Regardless of up or down, it’s sh*tty.

Keanu is known as River’s bff.

MP was River’s friend too, but nobody really knew that. And they probably weren’t as close as MP thinks.

Keanu did recreational drugs. MP, River, Heath, and Farley were hardcore users.

MP is probably wondering how Keanu managed to avoid addiction when the rest didn’t (MP included). He’s also probably jealous of Keanu for staying clean, building a successful movie career, and remaining attractive and beloved.

Heard that, too. Super strange!

Hardly.

He seems like it on Instagram, though. Like hard hawking Friends merchandise, which just seems so odd.

That's all fine, but doesn't justify why MP said petty and rude things about Keanu decades later. Jealously is a emotion I understand- but I try to rise above pettiness and if you are selling a book that seeks to help others understand and or cope with addiction you shouldn't include these kind of tidbits.
