I think the Reeves stuff is a little weird, too. It sounds almost like he's ruminating, but to repeat it then twice makes it odd (especially given a editor must have read this). Reeves and River Phoenix were supposedly really close friends, and there are plenty of stories that Reeves was really devastated by Phoenix's death, and I wonder if there isn't something in that dynamic leftover - that Perry and Phoenix were friends, and Reeves and Phoenix were friends, and Perry is holding some sort of long grudge/anger over Phoenix's death that he blames on Reeves in some form or fashion. As a PP points out, it's almost a passive aggressive insult to Reeves that could be taken in a couple of different ways, none flattering, but also not specific.
Good point. I’m the one who posted the link to the book excerpt upthread, and when I saw Perry’s quote, it immediately came to mind even though I read the article several years ago. I think there is definitely some lingering resentment over River Phoenix’s death all these years later and I don’t believe it was an accident that Perry would call out Reeves specifically. How all of these things are intertwined is anyone’s guess though.
