child assaulted by another student with no history and no provocation

Middle school fights happen. There was one pretty bad one at Cooper Middle School today.

This. Even if school admin wants to come down hard, they will be discouraged to do so. Filing a police report and getting attorney will force action.

Also, no documented history isn’t the same thing as no history. The fact that the kid who was shoved is terrified to go back shows that he believes it will happen again.

The school won’t release the video to OP because she’s not involved. She’s not related to either kid. She has no idea who has seen it since she is a third party not involved in this situation. For all she knows, the school is pressing charges and is in the middle of a bigger investigation and that’s why it can’t be shown to anyone.

Or more likely, the video has a bunch of kids messing around like they do in the halls every single day. OP is a busy body trying to uncover a big story when there isn’t one. If the parents have a documented concussion and a kid who’s truly afraid to come to school it’s their business to follow up. Not OPs.

The Fairfax County police came out with a big press release after the chronic abuse at Freedom Hill in which they asked community members and parents to report crimes to them directly instead of to the schools. The police force was sick and tired of FCPS getting away with covering up crimes that occur within their walls.

Jesus this board has become an angry mob of adults seeking out revenge on a kid.

Nice work people, nice work.

FCPS covers everything up, whether it's stolen money or abuse. Their first priority is just to keep it all quiet. They will even threaten anyone who tries to blow the whistle or who makes too much noise.

What would “come down hard” look like? A suspension?

Geez, this is a second hand story.

You should stay out of it and let the families involved handle. No good is going to come from your involvement -- for you or for them.

No meaningful history between the two kids, no history of the other child assaulting others.

The kids is in shock, is afraid to go to school. The parents (my friend and spouse) want to ensure school takes action to prevent this from happening again. The school won't release video (this was caught on a security camera) or tell how they will address this.

What are some things that the parents can do? Does it make sense to consult a lawyer? They just want steps taken to protect their kid/prevent the kid who pushed from approaching their kid.

Thank you!!

I mean, something similar happened to my DC in 9th. Kid pulled out chair as DC was sitting, DC fell and hit head. Teacher saw it. Nothing was done. It was a joke (they are friends) but still would think SOMETHING would happen to the kid who pulled out the chair.

What type of punishment is appropriate for that? Lunch detention?

Something very similar happened at Longfellow last week.

Middle school. I do not want to give out the family's details. Thank you.

Then why ade you posting about it?

Presumably to get the advice they asked for, and not to give you fodder about a specific school to gossip about.

Anonymous wrote:This is OP. This is not a joke gone bad. The pusher very forcefully and intentionally shoved the kid. The kid minded his own business and did not even see the pusher coming.

The thread is not to question my involvement. It is to discuss avenues available to parents to protect kids in this scenario. All the parents want is for the pusher to stay the f away from their kid.

The first sentence of your original post literally states that this was a joke. So which is it? Get your story straight. Or do I smell troll?

The victim was not in on the joke, did not see/expect the pusher and suffered a concussion. The pusher said it was a joke.

OP

So the pusher lied to try to redirect heat off themselves. Got it.
