child assaulted by another student with no history and no provocation

Anonymous
A friend's child was intentionally and without any provocation pushed by another student as a joke, fell and suffered a concussion.

No meaningful history between the two kids, no history of the other child assaulting others.

The kids is in shock, is afraid to go to school. The parents (my friend and spouse) want to ensure school takes action to prevent this from happening again. The school won't release video (this was caught on a security camera) or tell how they will address this.

What are some things that the parents can do? Does it make sense to consult a lawyer? They just want steps taken to protect their kid/prevent the kid who pushed from approaching their kid.

Thank you!!

A concussion is serious. They should be contacting the police.

The parents need to schedule a meeting with the principal and the counselor immediately. The school cannot say what consequences are given to another child, but they absolutely have to say what steps they will take to ensure the kid who was pushed is safe. The school can and should share those plans.

It makes sense to send their kid back to school and tell him/her to get over it. This is ridiculous.

Middle school. I do not want to give out the family's details. Thank you.

You have NO idea what happened, OP. Stop speculating based on what the boy's mom is telling you. There are always many sides to the story.

Get ready for big bs from the principal and asst ppal, because they both do whatever to cover their behinds. Most likely they will write a report which includes bs. Your friend and spouse can suggest the administrators to use the report as toilet paper.

I am not asking for your advice on what I should be doing. I am asking what can parents do in a given scenario.

Nothing really, the other student (and their parents) will say it was an accident.

A concussion is very serious, but you said it was a joke, and the kids have no history and no beef. I don’t see anything that needs to be done here. What are the parents looking for? To make sure the pusher knows it’s not a funny joke and will never do it again? That seems reasonable.

You are wildly incorrect.

What do you think sends kids to the alternative schools in fcps?
Weapons, drugs, and assault. So yeah, something can be done.
