There is no evidence anywhere that anyone gives a damn about what rank depts are at the undergrad level. Chicago’s ROI and 10 yr earnings are God awful. |
| I know a uchicago that majored in Econs last year and still unemployed. |
No one cares about the NUMBER for a department, sure, but people absolutely do care about the prestige of a department as you can see by other peoples response to this thread. |
The "best" UChicago undergrad program is economics and nobody is breaking the door down to give all of them 100K-plus bonus job offers. Only the tippy top 3.8-3.0 GPA econ kids with perfectly curated resumes are getting 100K-plus bonus jobs. The rest are getting normal 60K and 65K job offers open to any other college kid at Depaul to UMD to UVA. Same for all the other random depts you claim are top 15 or whatever. Nobody freaking cares. |
They are not in the same tier. Wake Forest is UVA/UNC tier, but wealthier by magnitudes. Chicago is for students who didn't get into HYPS due to not having a legacy/sports/leadership/affirmative action hook. |
How exactly? WASP generally means Protestants, but in the case of the South, it specifically means Southern Baptist. Meaning being Catholic is obviously not okay, but even say Episcopalian Protestant is not sufficient. So the Southern WASPs are the ones that have problems with Christians who they don't consider to be sufficiently Christian. |
Deep South native here. Let me assure you that WASP in the south are not Southern Baptists. They’re the Presbyterians, the ones with money. There’s a serious class line between sects of Protestantism. |
I feel like this is a you problem, not a Chicago problem. Anyway, OP, I think you've gotten some good feedback. What did your kid pick? |
This has nothing to do with being a "gentile", it's a basic fact regarding social life in a wealthy Southern school. The only benefit that Wake offers over Chicago is the social life, more particularly Greek Life. However to experience the fullest extent of social life that Wake offers, one must be a wealthy Southern WASP. Most preferably, the "P" meaning Southern Baptist. This is the general reality, and to point it out is not bigoted against "gentiles". If anything it's the socially exclusionary practices that are bigoted against the vast majority of "gentiles" who don't fit into the particular demographic of wealthy - Southern - white - Anglo-Saxon (in claim) - Southern Baptist. |

I think a lot of the views posted here about Wake Forest are pretty outdated.
My child does not attend but spent some time on campus and thought it was great. Excellent business school, amazing campus, great sports but most of all DC thought the kids at Wake seemed genuinely happy. Apparently they work hard too. Not a walk in the park. |
+1 Also wake forest has a reputation for grade deflation |
The people that matter know about U. Chicago - employers at top firms and admissions at graduate, law, medical and business schools. |
Y’all. Please. The Southern Baptists are not the upper class Southerners. The rich Southerners look down at the Southern Baptists. The Southern class system is very English-/Indian-style. Intricate and brutal. |
Yes they teach, but they are often among the worst profs… (yes I went there) Honestly, uchicago is brutal academically. Compared to my friends, only caltech and mit are in the same league. Probably the best PhD prep university in the US. I knew one kid who went to wake. Sounded like he had a lot more party time than I did. Though for wake’s price - I’d rather just go to a true SEC school. Clemson sounds more fun. |
Recruiters from top finance and consulting firms do not look at the GPA for students from schools like HYPS and Chicago. The school itself is there filter. What you say regarding 3.8+ GPA filter for Econ majors is certainly true for students from UVA, UNC, and Wake though. |
