Why not? They aren't allowed to? or the school is concerned it would piss off the parents? |
We aren’t allowed to. We aren’t medical professionals. We can’t diagnose. |
We also can’t tell you to get them tested or the district could end up having to pay for it. |
Several of DC's teacher said DC was having problems staying focus, was impulsive, inattentive, recommended that I hire a tutor so she could complete her work after school. I got her tested. She had severe ADHD, went to psychiatrist, started treatment. We went to the school with the report because there was a bunch of accommodation recommendations, the local screening committee meeting said that there was insufficient evidence for evaluation and that in their opinion, the ADHD was not adversely affecting her education. Three years later, we got an advocate and FCPS couldn't move fast enough to find DC eligible for special education and an IEP. The reason the school downplay these issues is that they don't want to evaluate or provide services. |
| Thank you for posting this! My DD got 4s pretty much across the board in academics but a few 2s in citizenship areas (self control, completing work on time). That's not a surprise to me because I have talked to the teacher about self-control and talk to my DD about it on an almost daily basis, but I don't know what beyond that I can do. I have always suspected she may have ADHD but the teacher seemed ambivalent on that. Not really sure what else do to. |
Ignore it. Citizenship grades are subjective and thankfully disappear by middle school. If she’s getting 4s I wouldn’t worry. |

Usually means that the child is behind and struggling especially if the effort grade is higher. My child in 2nd just got a bunch of 1s. She is already in reading and math intervention. Also currently being evaluated for special education. So I think the 1s will help us get the IEP that DC needs.

My profoundly dyslexic child who could not read got straight 4s through elementary on everything. i
I don't think she earned the 4s but she got them and even got the special 6th grade graduation diploma. It would make me so angry when she would get 4s in reading.every.single.quarter. |
It really depends on the teacher, too. My older son always got lots of 2s for behavior/citizenship. And we had frequent conversations with his teachers. By 5th grade this had turned around. He is in middle school in all Honors classes getting straight As and we've had no behavior issues. My younger son had many report cards with all 4s and a random 3. However, some of his teachers won't start out with all 4s for anyone because they want to leave room for growth throughout the year. I would check in with a teacher that was giving lots of 2s and ask if there's any way you can support at home, but depending on the teacher it might not mean that much. |
Your child did distance learning last year? During the 2021-2022 school year? Interesting. |
Oops. I just saw the date said 2022, not 2023. Ignore this commwnt. |
| My kids had a fair amount of 2s when they started ES, but they earned 3s and 4s by 6th grade, and then mostly As in MS and HS. 2s are basically indicating your child has not yet developed whatever skill is being measured, but they will usually get there by the end of the year. |

With most assignments online and very little (if any) homework coming home, it's much tougher to know where a kid is behind. When they had more paper homework to do at night, you could see on an ongoing basis if they are struggling in certain areas. Now, it's harder to know. |
