How common are 2s on ES report cards?

That's not a surprise to me because I have talked to the teacher about self-control and talk to my DD about it on an almost daily basis, but I don't know what beyond that I can do. I have always suspected she may have ADHD but the teacher seemed ambivalent on that. Not really sure what else do to.

Ignore it. Citizenship grades are subjective and thankfully disappear by middle school. If she’s getting 4s I wouldn’t worry.

Citizenship grades can indicate whether or not your child is disruptive to the learning environment. If you are seeing a lot of 2s, talk to your child about it and tell them you expect to see an improvement on the next report card. If they don’t think you care, they won’t care either. If they know that you do care, they will put in the effort.

I'm happy with 3s and 4s and view 2s as an indication that my child requires additional support. When my child was getting 2s in reading, we hired a reading tutor; when my child got a 2 in math, we asked the school for extra pull outs. This year my child got 3s and 4s.

The key worlds are consistently, usually and sometimes. Some kids are truly only “sometimes” doing things correctly (life and citizenship) and need a 2. We are required to send home progress reports if we are giving 2s in any area.

No. It’s mastery grading.

I would be a little worried if in math or reading. The kids I give 2s to are not doing well. -ES Teacher

+1
2s are a suggestion to contact the teacher for support in core areas.
I also learned that repeated 2s are in some of the citizenship categories are a way a teacher might convey concerns about potential ADHD since they can't outright tell you that.

Why not? They aren't allowed to? or the school is concerned it would piss off the parents?

We aren’t allowed to. We aren’t medical professionals. We can’t diagnose.

We also can’t tell you to get them tested or the district could end up having to pay for it.

But you can refer to local screening, correct?

Bottom line, ask the teacher and you’ll find out if your kid is disruptive, falling behind or teacher just likes to do lower scores at beginning of year and then have them all be 3 and 4 at end. Only the first 2 are reason for you to do something. If it’s teacher wanting to give better scores at end of year, then ignore and either don’t show scores to your kid or tell them they is that teacher is doing or as they get older they will be confused.

Really? My first grader has all 4s and a couple of 3s (in like PE). I just assumed pretty much all kids get 4s if they put in a decent effort. I didn't know 3s were the norm.

Some teachers give lots of 4s rather than the 3s many earned - but it doesn’t hurt and it appeases “those” parents

The majority of teachers that start low and want to show growth are not starting with 2s.

Blanket statements regarding grading are seldom helpful. If you child has low grades in ES, talk to the Teacher. You can send an email asking for a conference to discuss what is happening in the classroom. If you enter conferences with an attitude of “How can I support my kids learning” you are likely to learn a good amount about your kid.

Based on what we heard from the parents of other kids, Teachers were grading based on what they saw in the classroom. We had neighbors whose kid was in our kids class complaining about hours of homework sent home, DS had none. He completed his work in class, the neighbor kid didn’t. We have an idea about what was happening because parents of other kids were asking if what they were seeing was what others were seeing at neighborhood events and on a class FB page started by a parent. The overall picture helped some of the parents figure out that their kids were either struggling or that their kids were not paying attention in class and work with their kids on their issues.

Kids who are not medicated robots get 2s in citizenship. If 4s in academics and 2s on the left side of the report card, your kid will probably be most successful in life.

2’s are bad and not common. They indicate a problem.

Not common. If your child is getting a 2 on a report card, please request a conference with the teacher. Get more info and have a plan for supporting the child.
