How common are 2s on ES report cards?

Parent of 2nd grader and 1st grader.

I am assuming 3s are the norm grade for most kids, is that right?

3s are probably more the norm, but 2s aren’t uncommon.

My kids always get 4s mixed with at most a couple of 3s. I don’t think it’s a reflection of anything more than good behavior and effort. I would email and request a conference for a 2 because that seems like a teacher saying something is wrong

Is 4 an A, 3 a B, and 2 a C or is 4 more like A+?

Depends what the 2 is in. If it’s in any academic subject, I would definitely request a conference. If it’s in one of the citizenship areas, I would let it go. Unless it like a bunch of 2s in that area. I might email asking about it.

Don’t try to compare to letter grades. They aren’t the same. Letter grades are typically percentage based.

My son had a bunch of 2s in citizenship in k-2. Went away when he started aap in third grade.

Both my kids had one or two of these every year, usually in the first couple quarters. One kid was in the citizenship part, the other in music and/or art.

DS got almost all 2s in the behavior category, whatever that was called, and frequently in language arts in early elementary. He doesn’t get in trouble in middle school and does well in honors classes.

I think grades were pretty random in the 1-4 report card years. I only paid attention to the comments.

^my other child is in elementary now and always gets 2s in foreign language. They have to take it at her school and she doesn’t like it. Don’t worry over 2s.

I would be a little worried if in math or reading. The kids I give 2s to are not doing well. -ES Teacher

+1
2s are a suggestion to contact the teacher for support in core areas.
I also learned that repeated 2s are in some of the citizenship categories are a way a teacher might convey concerns about potential ADHD since they can't outright tell you that.

Really? My first grader has all 4s and a couple of 3s (in like PE). I just assumed pretty much all kids get 4s if they put in a decent effort. I didn't know 3s were the norm.

Congratulations, your kid is special.

I've seen occasional 2s on behavior categories. In one case the teacher and I worked on a plan to fix a real area of concern (it took years, but the kid did get there). In the other case the teacher clearly indicated that she used 3s as the top grade for the early quarters and a 2 was fine, so I didn't even bother.
