How common are 2s on ES report cards?

Stupid is as stupid does!

Seriously. This is elementary school we are talking about. Relax!

This is such a weird perspective--2s mean they need support--so you get support. It has nothing to do with flaws. Why even have an education in the first place if you don't care about providing appropriate support for learning? The skill gap that a 2 in elementary school tells you is easily supported, if you wait for middle school they may have years of struggling to make up.

NP. Agree with first PP. At least one poster on this thread has said that a 2 means that your kid has ADHD.

That's nuts. Our schools have gone wrong somehow. I don't blame teachers, I think NCLB and other factors are more to blame. But something has gone off track and our schools are not doing right by our children.

I'm the PP who talked about 2s and ADHD. I said consistent 2s in behavioral areas are A WAY a teacher can POTENTIALLY SIGNAL that you might want to screen your child for ADHD. It's a way to communicate their professional judgment about your child without attempting to diagnose. If you share their concerns, you then go to the doctor and do a formal screening. I didn't say a 2 = ADHD rather that a pattern of 2s are indicative of needing support--and can be a signal to go for screening. It was accurate in our case.

It’s so teacher dependent. In elementary academics, one year my kid had a mix of 2s and 3s, the next all 4s, and the next mostly 3s with some 4s and some 2s. His understanding and work ethic didn’t really change year to year. He went into all honors classes in middle school and did fine.

I don’t really put much faith in 2s, to be honest. DD brought some home in 3rd grade LA, I think. The teacher couldn’t explain why, really. Then she got 3s and then 4s. Looking at the work she was turning in, I couldn’t tell a qualitative difference. I think the teacher liked to show that the kids were making progress from one quarter to the next, and this is how she did it. Every parent I spoke to spotted the same pattern. She was a terrible teacher.

I have a student who looked at his Progress Report at the end of the day and was shocked that he had “another 2” in PE. For some reason he thought he couldn’t get a “2” two quarters in a row.

My kid got a 2 in music for effort…I couldn’t give two flying Fs honestly. Music is supposed to be fun, at least in the lower grades, but this teacher is probably chasing some lost dream of being a college professor. She also gave my kindergarten a 3 in music…🙄 the real subjects like math and language arts they get 4s, so whatever. Behavior, there is 22 kids in class, of course sometimes they cannot contain themselves and want to share or talk more than they are allowed, that’s my kid’s problem. He wants to say more and there is no time (according to the teacher). He has 4s and 3s in good citizen too, but says many kids in class are misbehaving, so to me even a 2 is totally normal in k-3 or so.
Your kid is good, you know him/her best, so if you think something is wrong, you can reach out to the teachers and ask.

Don’t even get me started on PE. All the girls get 3s in PE (they’ve apparently discussed it). The PE teachers don’t even know anyone’s name! My 6th grader says she has no idea how they assign grades when they don’t know who’s who.

There are skills in music too and that's what they grade. There are national and state standards just like there are national standards for reading, math, science, social studies, visual art etc. Just because you think music should just be "fun" doesn't mean that's how education works. You sound like you are conveying your own biases to your kids (and, no, I'm not a music teacher). A lot of people want their kids to have a solid foundation in the arts--as well as enjoyment. It's something I value about FCPS--they have a strong music, art and (once you start MS) theater program.

DC had a bunch of 2 on citizenship elements for both 1st and 2nd quarter. She's been struggling emotionally and behaviorally at school since the start of the school year. She also has an IEP for a learning disability, ADHD, and anxiety. When I asked the school for a conference to discuss these issues, all of a sudden, DC is doing "exceptionally well". I insisted on a meeting. Clearly there's a problem.

If this is really true, you can foia the data to confirm and then file a title IX complaint with the county

You can determine from a FOIA whether or not a particular teacher knows the students' name? This is truly a first world problem.

How would you even confirm that they didn’t know the kids name?

It’s elementary school PE! It would be the height of insanity to go to that much trouble over it.
