There are elections this year for four board seats. The primary is June 28th and the general is Nov. 8th. District 1 (incumbent Judy Docca), District 3 (incumbent Scott Joftus, recent appointee), District 5 (incumbent Brenda Wolff), and one at-large seat (incumbent Karla Silvestre) are on the ballot. Joftus and Silvestre have filed for reelection, and Wolff has stated she intends to. We don't know if Docca will run again. Only two challengers have filed: Jay Guan from District 1, and Julie Yang from District 3. All voters can vote for candidates from all districts.

I’m voting straight anti-incumbent. I like Guan. I know nothing about Yang but I will make sure to pay close attention. Joftus is proving to be having a hard time keeping himself out of conflicts of interest.

Are they getting better at keeping things quiet or will McKnight automatically get the job because they really didn't do a deep search into anyone else?

I wonder that too. Everything is behind the closed doors now. No transparency at all.

That’s Brenda Wolff and it’s intentional. We should expect better. The process has clearly been orchestrated to anoint McKnight. Regardless of your feelings about her, people should be very concerned about the lack of an open and transparent process.

I don't think we heard the names of several candidates under consideration during past superintendent searches. We did hear one time about a preferred candidate who then pulled himself from consideration.

+1 I endorse. Objectively she has not worked out. It’s no shame and in fact it should be a priority to cut bait now and move on.

I agree with you.

She's excellent and learned from the best. We would be very lucky if she takes the job.

I don’t know anything about her but Weast, Starr and Smith are like a murderer’s row of superintendents. She hardly learned from the best. She learned from the inept.

And yet you hear people calling for the return of these white guys! (Well, maybe not Starr ) There's a heck of a lot of (unconscious?) bias and misogyny floating around here.

During prior searches there was at least clearly communicated timelines and processes.

Huh? I won’t even argue about curriculum or policy. Just on a basic administrative level, she’s has not been able to communicate effectively about anything. Even if you grant her a COVID bogey for bus drivers and school lunches, she has failed to ensure that parents know if the bus will pick their kids up or in some schools if the lunches will be delivered and ready to eat on time.

It would be better if she was just a lot more honest and transparent. Instead, it’s all excuses and blame shifting coated in bureaucratic speak.

I expect this type of behavior from colleagues at work who try to hide their incompetence. I do not expect it from a leader of any organization. She’s just not leadership material.

Seems to me the process has been the same as the last few searches; they're even using the same search firm they always have. This timeline has been on their website for months: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/boe/superintendent-search/
I think this is standard operating procedure for MCPS.

There have not been finals in MCPS for about 10 years and MCPS students are still doing great in colleges.

You mean they are doing great at Montgomery College. Because that's where most of them end up even if they announce they are going away.

Same process? Then name the parents that were secretly allowed to interview the candidates? In the past, those groups were known. This time? Not so much.

NP. Many high school graduates end up at local community college isn't a damning fact (although the actual number isn't "most," it's 20-25% of recent graduates out of the 80% total enrolling in college shortly after high school). MC is a great option for a lot of kids. We're lucky to have it.

Also, the deadline to file as a candidate is coming up soon, Feb. 22nd. So far, none of the BOE races have enough candidates to even appear on the ballot in June, according to the MoCo Board of Elections.

"The Board of Education contest is non-partisan. The top 2 candidates from each contest move on to the General Election ballot. If no more than 2 candidates file in a District contest or At-Large contest, the contest does not appear on the Primary Election ballot. The officially filed candidates move on to the General Election ballot as the nominees in that contest."

+1

Honestly, the people on this board.

I'm no MCPS-defender, but imagine complaining about having one of the best community colleges in the country at your fingertips.

Imagine complaining about a resource which lets kids decided if higher ed is right for them without going tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

I don't love McKnight, at all. But this dig at MC is way out of left field

I could not agree more. The community college hate on this board is really not ok.

Thank you.

You think the schools have it bad; working at central office is HORRIFIC. No insight into who the BOE will pick, but it's probably her and I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who can get out does exactly that. MCPS is a mess.
