It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science.

Funny then that only the entitled rich parents are complaining.

Tell that to the kids at Wakefield. Your response is totally out of touch with the reality of what many kids across the entire county are feeling right now.

Honest question, how do you know that? Has there been a poll of parents by socioeconomic status?

I can see both sides, and am not angry about the decision. However, a junior losing the remainder of their basketball season, after losing their sophomore season last year, may have lost their opportunity to play in college. I’m not talking about scholarships necessarily, but just the ability to continue. It’s different than a kid losing two weeks of a year long activity, and it’s different than my freshman son losing the remainder of his basketball season. Yes, he lost last year too, but it isn’t such a big deal for younger kids. It’s a real gut punch to older high school kids.

It is really frustrating that the closures are focused only on school aged kids. Is AP&R canceling adult classes or closing fitness centers for adults and seniors? Now 5-18 yos are vaccinated. Why should only their stuff be canceled?

(AP&R just sent an email postponing rec basketball to follow APS's lead.)

Maybe it’s not directly covid related.

Teachers and staff might need to stay after school for sports and clubs as well and perhaps the 2 weeks was to not overwhelm teachers and staff with extra responsibilities who might be struggling with other issues at home or something like that. Just a thought.

Taking my kids to the gym today to workout. Private gyms are fully open and maskless.

But we have to punish Arlington kids by canceling sports, while no other school district is doing the same.

Parks and Rec just postponed everything until Jan 18th. My teen agrees that it’s a smart move.

I think they will follow, perhaps even at the directive of the health department or Northam

Wow. You really think this is a good idea?

Yes, COVID will be here forever and it’s not going away. My kids are vaccinated too, and already had asymptomatic COVID (which needs to stop soon as that’s called “not sick”).

All of you triple vaccinated NPR listeners can hide inside your house forever to avoid a cold.

Gyms are packed in Arlington right now too. My kids need to be practicing and they can’t do it with their teams.

They postponed stuff for kids only. They also sent an email saying rec centers open for adults after the holiday on Jan 3rd. Adults can continue to catch and spread Covid. Two different standards.

Welcome sports family to these boards. A number of people on them are completely COVID nuts, haven’t eaten inside a restaurant since 2019 and can’t imagine the rest of the country is back to normal. They had no idea the backlash they would generate by canceling sports. Please stay involved so this never happens again
