APS hurts children again by canceling Extracurriculars until January 14th

It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science.

Funny then that only the entitled rich parents are complaining.

Tell that to the kids at Wakefield. Your response is totally out of touch with the reality of what many kids across the entire county are feeling right now.

Parent of a Wakefield student-athlete. This decision is penalizing kids across the county. Has any other DMV public school district done this? APS reversed the decision to cancel winter sports last year when vaccines weren’t even available. I expect they’ll reverse this, too.

AP&R is literally hosting an indoor NYE party for seniors but postponing kid sports. Anyone else writing to the county? The double standard is maddening.

Where are you seeing this? I see a virtual one on the calendar, but not in-person.

Teachers and staff might need to stay after school for sports and clubs as well and perhaps the 2 weeks was to not overwhelm teachers and staff with extra responsibilities who might be struggling with other issues at home or something like that. Just a thought.

ugh. really?!
Not any more additional responsibility than they've voluntarily signed up for and have done in the past.
Besides, it is obviously a precaution post-holiday gatherings to let any potential COVID outbreak subside .... however, I disagree with the policy. I would think hundreds of kids in close quarters all day long during school poses a bigger risk of spread and outbreak than extracurricular meetings and practices. If APS doesn't want to expose kids to other teams in other districts and large spectator crowds, that's one thing. Just cancel the games, then. But if extracurricular kids are being tested every day anyway, no riskier than returning to school full-time.

They postponed stuff for kids only. They also sent an email saying rec centers open for adults after the holiday on Jan 3rd. Adults can continue to catch and spread Covid. Two different standards.

THAT is just wrong policy. They're either acting like only kids are catching and spreading COVID; or they're acting to protect only kids. Not that those kids would be protected from their parents and other adult contacts going to the gym.

You’re an idiot. Sports don’t matter that much. Poor baby Larlo.

Is the county doing anything to limit indoor bar gatherings for NYE? I see you can buy tickets for events in Clarendon. Why is that okay but all activities for kids need to be postponed? Aren't 20 somethings the least vaccinated/boosted group in Arlington?

It’s not clear that the parks and rec NYE party isn’t actually just virtual, so maybe hold on a minute.

County run programs vs. private businesses. Much easier for the jurisdiction to pause or cancel their own programming.

So I guess you can quibble with my wording, but what I meant is it's not a desperate hospital situation here in Arlington right now. And I don't think kids' activities are going to be the tipping point, esp. as many others have pointed out when we haven't taken other drastic steps like closing indoor dining. Which, by the way, I won't eat indoors right now, but I will let my kids play basketball with masks on.

This pretty much says it all about Arlington parents. PP will protect themselves by not eating indoors, but will force coaches, refs and others to face additional exposure by forcing them to hold games. Selfish.

Because you can wear a mask indoors while playing, but you can't while eating! Honestly, people.

And anyone who thinks this closure, once it happens, "will only last two weeks," is kidding themselves.

Also, I think this is a fair question: Which is more likely?
a) this two week closure of a small, select set of activities that largely affect teens in Arlington will result in a saved life from COVID
b) this significant disruption, yet again, to "normal" activities for our teens will harm mental health and increase depression and the risk that one of our teens will commit suicide

From my perspective, "B" is much more likely, and it's not even close.

What kind of mask? Cloth is totally ineffective against omicron and surgical like 10-20%. Don’t even try with the lie that kids are going to wear N95s while playing basketball abd breathing in each other’s faces.

And stuff it with the stupid, manipulative “if kids can’t play their sportball, they’ll start offing themselves” line. Any kid who would do that has significant pathological mental health issues and that’s a parenting responsibility. Get out of sports and into mental health treatment stat.

None of the other counties are canceling sports. This is just to appease the Arlington nuts

This thread is overrun by mentally ill obsessive sports parents.
