APS hurts children again by canceling Extracurriculars until January 14th

Many sports families are outraged. Next door, FCPS is proudly announcing their sports will continue as usual.

COVID will be here forever. Our athletes are vaccinated too and tested often. This is just a move to appease the Zero COVID screamers (Smart Restart has already Tweeted their approval of harming kids by canceling extracurriculars).

We have a mental health crisis going on with kids right now but APS doesn’t care.

My child is so upset his games were just canceled. The fall of some people.

I can’t believe any APS parents’ group would support hurting our kids like this. Sick people

I cannot believe a school system would prioritize learning over sports! Horrible.

Aren’t there enough open threads right now about APS return to school in January?

Maybe folks who want their kids to play can organize some unofficial fun scrimmages.

No, you don't get it. These people won't be happy if they have to make one single alteration or sacrifice. They don't believe in that.

"I'm living my life and traveling and going to parties! You can't stop me!"

"What, sports are canceled?! That's so unfair!"

"OMG, my kids' school just closed! I can't believe they'd do this to us! I'm going to vote Republican in the next election, that'll show them!"

(Thus the cycle repeats itself.)

Are you following what’s happening in professional sports? COVID is so contagious they can’t even field teams for bowl games. So, either cancel extracurricular sorts now and maybe prevent further spread and a chance to play later or do nothing, cause more spread, then cancel because entire teams are infected. What exactly do you expect to happen if sports continue in the midst of an unprecedented surge and period of substantial spread?

Society is handling this so wrong. There is no reason to cancel kids' sporting events and plays and performances. We are harming our kids for no reason. So far, Omicron is a headache but not a hospital surge. What are we trying to prevent, exactly, and why does the entire burden of that fall on kids' activities? Mental health concerns are huge. Kids need and deserve as much normal as we can give them. The sky is not falling. We have vaccines and boosters and better treatments. Let the kids play.

If you want to cancel spectators, fine. If you want to require athletes to wear masks, even that I am OK with. But don't cancel all activities.

It's for 2 weeks to get a handle on the major surge happening right now. Our area is the hottest COVID hotspot right now. A little perspective folks. Th kids will be alright, although I'm worried about the parents.

Good.

I hope you are upset and angry. Now you know how I felt as a parent al last year. And it’s fine by me if your kid has to sacrifice some. My kids already did that. Time to share the load.

They did this to appease the paranoid. Perhaps if people stopped having a tantrum every time CNN runs a new headline for clicks and instead started acting like adults there would be better decision making.

To PP above, those sporting events were cancelled reactively, not proactively. Huge difference. If a team has an outbreak and can't compete, of course you have to cancel. That's not this.

There is a hospital surge happening all over the place, including in NoVa. Please take head out of a**.

We have more hospitalized Covid-19 patients than at any other time during the entire pandemic.

I'm basing that on Mike Silverman's updates from Va Hospital Center so looking specifically in Arlington:

"Our hospital census is up about 30% since last Friday.
This represents about 40% of our peak census of COVID patients over the last 2 years."
