It isn’t just sports though- it is everything. Even low risk activities like art club and robotics club. If APS had shut down activities based on some sort of risk stratification, I might have been okay with the decision. But Duran is treating all activities as equal risk. That is not based on any science. This is a knee jerk reaction that sends a message to our students that their hobbies and extracurricular interests aren’t important— or at least not as important as letting adults hang out in the bars in Clarendon, or at the gym, or in restaurants, or at the bazillion other places where people are unmasked and the science tells us are actually contributing to the spread of COVID. |
We knew virtually nothing about the virus in March 2020. We are in a completely different place now. I could see the entire month of January being unstable, given Omicron is projected to peak in late January. |
APS has no control over the County’s or the State’s decisions. Their purview is solely the children entrusted to their care. It’s a 2 week pause, FFS. |
It's a big country out there. If APS isn't working for you, and you can work remotely, move. |
+1000 And it's not even based on any documented spread. It's just full stop on all the extras for no particular reason. And if you believe the two week thing, I have a bridge to sell you. |
Just two weeks to slow the spread . . . . |
x1000 |
Well he’s big in equity so he’s equally screwing all kids. |
If APS is canceling sports their teams should be required to forfeit the games. A lot of their winter sports teams sucked anyway (like W-L and Wakefield girls basketball). |
If you really believe that taking a 2 week pause on ECs is “hurting” your children then you have bigger problems. Some entitlement there? Just saying… |
People have every reason to be skeptical the pause will only last for two weeks |
I’ve heard the athletes and athletic parents are already organizing. I’m sure the media will be all over this as well.
APS woke up a sleeping giant |
It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science. |
Funny then that only the entitled rich parents are complaining. |
Funny that it’s only entitled rich North Arlington non-athletic, Zero Covid parents who support this harm to children. |
