Spare us your holier-than-thou screed, PPs above. What I mean is that Brent families played no rule in determining the site of the temporary Latin 2 campus. Moreover, they can always say that they like. Expressing carefully informed opinions is nice, but so is speaking your mind in a city and nation where speech is, um, protected. I strongly suspect that nobody will be "weeding through public comments" related to any aspect of the roll out of Latin 2. Nobody. |
There's no turn key building for Latin anywhere. They're going to build, likely on an existing site with room to expand. The only question is where. I suspect they'll pick site of their choosing as long as they hold firm on at-risk set aside. |
| Which DC charters have built their own schools from the foundation up? I know well-resourced KIPP sometimes does. Stand-alone charters very seldom build from scratch, because they can't muster anywhere near the resources to do that. I see Latin 2 rehabbing and existing building somewhere in Ward 5 eventually. |
New construction can be cheaper than dealing with some old lead and asbestos-riddled problem property. |
You sure? 😉 |
Seems like Basis would be a safer option, assuming you have a kid that can handle the rigor. |
Sometimes true but there really aren't that many vacant sites in DC that would accommodate a build from the ground up -- especially if you need a site near a metro or other city services. A pre-existing school or office building is much more likely. This is based on my experience with a charter that has built from the group up and has also rehabbed/expanded an existing building. |
DC Scholars is up for charter review soon, and Ingenuity Prep is up next year. Maybe Latin is hoping one of those buildings could become available. I realize it's tacky to talk about shutting down schools, but closing low performers is part of the PCSB deal. And closing a low performer might mean a better school comes in. |
More like handle the dreariness, Hobbesian culling-of-the-herd philosophy, lack of fresh air and claustrophobia. |
Yup. That is what I am thinking. Basis is ranked #1 in DC but Latin is only #14. Plus, the new Latin campus is in a high-crime area, will suffer growing pains over the next couple of years, and then will likely to move EOTR. And, on top of all that, Latin is now going to prioritize at-risk in the lottery. I wouldn't be surprised to see Latin drop even further in the rankings. https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/middle-schools/district-of-columbia |
Ugh BASIS is so depressing though. I have a kid who could handle it and I just don’t want to sentence them to that prison. |
| Train on Salusa Secundus, turn out like Sardaukar. QED, BASIS. |
Agreed. Options for Hill families are pretty limited but that looks like it might be our best recourse too. |
Yeah. However, I wish Latin would stay true to the founding vision : " a school for all 4 wards, in the central location". It was such a good goal. |
| If the listed as the first choice in our lottery preferences, this year is probably the only chance most of us will ever have for getting into Latin. The at-risk preference will only go to a small number of seats -- the rest will be open, with no sibling preferences. |
