What do we think about Latin second campus

Late to this party. Are they opening next year? What grades will they have?

Definitely opening in August 2022 for grades 5-6, more than 100 spots per grade, no sibling preferences.

But an at-risk set-aside of 15-30 seats per grade.

I went to the open house in November. They said that for 5th graders there will be approximately 95 spots at 2nd street, with 33% going to siblings, and 45-50 spots at the Cooper campus. It sounded like they wanted to keep about half the spots open at the Cooper campus to be able to accept 6th graders next year. (I didn't write down the number of 6th grade spots at Cooper, but I recall it being more than, maybe double, the 5th graders, so I think the PP is probably right there.)

I also wrote down 15-25 seats for the at-risk set aside, and I assume that is at each campus and per grade, but I can't say for certain.

As an aside, I have a 4th grader in a DCI feeder and I'm 95% sure I'll send them to DCI, but I have done zero research on middle schools yet. Are there any other EOTP middle schools that start at 5th that I should be considering beside the two (Latin and Basis) discussed in this thread?

At ITS we have some kids who came over from MV, but I think maybe because they were ready to not do Spanish anymore.

OG Latin has no seats for 6th.

So, for non-at-risk and non-sibling families, maybe 48-58 5th grade slots at the original campus and 20-35 slots at the second campus? Figure 68-93 slots total?

Normally, they have around 63 slots for non-sibling families, so the new campus increases the number of slots by 5-30, depending on what Latin decides what to do regarding at-risk and number of seats?

The at-risk preference is going to ruin Latin.

BASIS it is.

Oh please. A no-preference lottery would result in some at-risk kids getting in, so this is a small increase. If that's all it takes to "ruin" a school, it wasn't a very good school.

I think it will essentially ruin Latin for ambitious families that can't afford to supplement a lot outside school. The rest will up their game with more tutors, academic summer camps, parents teaching kids this and that at home etc. The at-risk preference is one of those road to hell paved with good intentions ideas. Test-in GT from elementary school would work a lot better for the city, the parents and the students concerned.

I think you might be underestimating Latin. They are trying to get back to the at-risk percentage where they started, except for now they are a fully-fledged program. My wife is an educator and we are consistently blown away by the caliber of teaching at Latin and how year after year they draw out new skills in our kids. They can handle it.

What percentage of slots will be at risk? Presumably thr total composition will be higher than that bc at risk kids could get in thru the regular lotto too.

There will be 15-30 seats set aside, which would be roughly 15-30%.
