What do we think about Latin second campus

Anonymous
You guys do realize if you have that much heartburn about it, the campus location is up for public comment right now. Comment to the DCPCSB instead of anonymously on DCUM.

You can’t embarrass PCSB there for not forcing Latin to stick to its EOTR promises. Here at least every comment is public.

DCPCSB hasn't approved the location. The vote is in December. That is the very public space to speak out.

If I can't comment anonymously, I'm not going to comment. Sorry. Don't need my Hill neighbors getting at me because I think this school should benefit families in Ward 7 and 8 instead of more kids from Brent.

So basically Latin bait and switched the PCSB. Get authorized to expand on a promise of EOTR, then mysteriously fail to obtain the buildings that went to other charters. Oopsie! Guess we'll have to settle for middle class kids in Ward 5!

They can't stay at that location indefinitely; it's way too small for 5-12.

But it says they are looking for a place nearby (rather than the original plan of EOTR.

And they could stay if they use it just for middle school.

You are embarrassed by your position?

Where are your kids in school?

What do you mean? If I say Brent kids should go to the local MS and Latin should be for kids in greater need of a solid education, my neighbors aren't going to say "you are so right!" They are going to say "I pay my taxes (and deserve everything I can grub for myself, Ward 8 can wallow in its . . . those families could care about themselves if they want to I owe them nothing)."

I don't see anything large in the Edgewood area. I guess Washington Met (KC Lewis) which is near McMillen could work if they constructed something bigger, but I think DCPS would be foolish to part with a building in a central location like that. Unless there's some secret deal for them to have Spingarn (which I also doubt), I think they'll have to look to privately owned land.

I just don't see how DCPS can justify parting with any of its buildings WOTR, given the increases in enrollment (aside from the pandemic) and the need to serve students for many decades to come.

Washington Met building would be one target. 75K sq ft is ample. DCPS wanted it for swing space but not accessible to many schools in modernization pipeline. Dorothy Height and Raymond EC may be good candidates.

Old Banneker building would be another, but the Center City MS advocates (Shaw) have that as a target. No firm commitment to open DCPS middle school.

Spingarn has could be W7 candidate but better candidate is Winston EC near Hillcrest in W8

Wash Met is nowhere near big enough. They would have to build something new. And some examples of nearby schools up for renovation that could swing there are: JO Wilson, Seaton,
Bunker Hill, Langley, and Bruce-Monroe.

Winston has already come up for RFO, if Latin were interested I think we would know by now. And it isn't really big enough for Latin.

This is truly terrible. Ward 5 does not need another charter, especially at a location that is hard to reach. This will mean their at risk preference may be more talk than walk. They should not allow the school unless east of the river.

If you take an obnoxious, virtue signalling stand that seems more geared towards insulting Brent families and your neighbors, yes, you will get pushback. If you express a carefully informed opinion on the merits about how to balance competing interests, you’ll be fine. Plus, your neighbors are not going to be weeding through public comments submitted to the charter board anyway. Thus it appears you are more interested in insulting Brent families here by using the convenient cudgel of “Ward 8 kids.”

there's no cudgel here. The Brent kids ARE going to Latin. The Ward 8 kids are NOT getting a school....
