Return of real estate to descendants of Black landowners/freeman : CA

Anonymous
If we give back property to poor blocks can we just take it from folks like Jay Z and Oprah? If they were never brought here they would not be rich.

That is silly of course but that is the dice roll.

Most of the black land was worthless pretty much at the time. Even today a lot is in the south.

Look at our neck of the woods Scotland and Toby Town are two historical black neighborhoods as well as both Prince George, and a lot of sections of DC. Even in a 2021 real estate bubble of epic proportions they are not worth a lot.

I’m Jewish. I want my ancestral homes back that we fled/lost during the Holocaust. Except I understand that is futile and destructive.

There are many, many MANY horrifically wronged people in history. It simply isn’t practical to try to right every historical wrong.

Umm- are you unaware that there are several civil claims against specific people and governments from holocaust survivors and their descendants that have wrested both reparations as well as stolen property back? You might not have gotten anything back but there are people who are sent money from the german government and people who have received stolen artwork, apartments etc back from french and american owners. In many cases it was a new owners ho discovered the provenance of a work and instead of keeping it, put it back on auction and the was unable to sell and was ordered by the courts to return it to the original owner's descendants. Many of the actual owners who came back from teh camps to see others in possessions of their homes were too broken to take them back but in teh 1980s through to today thee has been a greater push for restitution.

California, Ft Reno (DC), and Chevy Chase cases are all in the 20th century and the local government kicking people off their property without fair market compensation. Like, people alive TODAY had their grandparents kicked off those properties. This is very recent history with a short family tree of heirs.

People bringing up slavery from the mid 1800s are just trying to distract from the issue.

taking houses with title that has been clear for decades and returning it would be beyond dubious constitutionally

It is way past 10 generations now

The Bible also states to forgive 70 x 7. Do you take that literally? Like, you only forgive 490 times, and the 491th time you no longer forgive them?

I don't think you understand what that passage really means.

The bible was also cool with slavery. And polygamy. And religion was used as a justification to conquer and enslave. But by all means rely on your stories about ghosts and miracles. I like fairy tales too!

It wouldn't be houses. Specifically with regard to Belmont, you could return the land the Saks is on to the heirs of the investors who were harassed and arrested out, from the heirs of the people who perpetrated it.

why should restitution depend on the current occupant of the land?

Were your ancestors the first to settle their land, or did they take it from another people during the prolonged period of inter-tribal conflict, such as the Comanches and the Apache or Tonkawa?

They were the first. Can we have it back now? It’s millions of acres of what you renamed the Midwest.

Prove it. That's not what genetic record shows.

Also most people are mixed ancestry. If your father was a slave and mom white, why should you get land back?

Sure. Where is the form I fill out to prove it and get my ancestors’ land back? You think there are no descendants in this county who had land in the west taken by the government in the 1800s? Are you that clueless?

Why should black people reparations for land that was taken from native Americans? How does that make any sense?

if you don't believe in the Bible, then why quote it?

OP here- so elated that the deed of the beachfront was returned to the descendants this week- one small step toward a more equitable society and addressing the injustices of the past.

+1 Homes in Toby town aren't worth a lot because of the neighborhood and people living in it, but you can bet that if they razed that neighborhood and sold off the lots, it would be really pricey simply because of the location.

Some people are truly dumb.
