19 - from Ft. Belvoir to Washington Mill (students who live off base. There are 3 apartment complexes and one road of single family homes right off base that currently go to FB. Anyone can rent in those apartments/buy those homes.)

35 - from Riverside to Stratford (eliminating a split feeder.). It's a small neighborhood off Rt. 1 consisting of single family and townhomes. I believe it's part of Gum Springs, the historic black community along Rt. 1

76 - from Riverside to Woodlawn. These are three condo, townhouse communities on the "wrong side" of Rt. 1. To help alleviate overcrowding at Riverside and keep the kids on the same side of Rt. 1 for elementary school. Even though they are condos/townhomes, they are pretty run down neighborhood.

107 - from Ft. Hunt to Mount Vernon Woods. These kids live in an apartment complex practically walking distance to MVW (0.9 miles from the front of the complex to MVW.) They've been bused 5 miles past 5 closer elementary schools to FH for years.

58 - from Groveton to Hybla Valley. This is an apartment complex behind one of the strip malls on Rt. 1. These kids are bused past Hybla Valley to get to Groveton

And we spent how much on this review to impact 1/3 of the students in the county from a couple of mile radius and 5% of the elementary schools?

The majority of the high school changes come from just two high schools - McLean and Marshall. Those changes are nowhere near the Route 1 corridor, but rather in Tysons (McLean to Langley) and Vienna (Marshall to Madison). And that’s a prelude to the larger changes for the new western HS.

Only going to see minimal changes at the high school level as the new Reid Aviation Magnet School will be small for a high school and cater to a particular student base.

The traditional school decision has been made and affirmed by voting it in. You lost, get over it.

Can we just step back and acknowledge what a failure this boundary review has been? The situations that most cried out for change were ignored; instead, random other neighborhoods were plucked for reassignment to appease the boundary change gods.

Michelle Reid is totally incompetent. This School Board is absolutely venal. People like Sandy Anderson and Karl Frisch are awful excuses for human beings.

They need to be relieved of their responsibilities in 2027. There needs to be a concerted effort between now and November 2027 to find replacements for every single Board member who are neither MAGA clowns nor FCDC tools. And then the new Board's first official act should be to fire Reid.

I agree that they shouldn’t have made unnecessary changes, but hard disagree that we should’ve moved kids because other people were crying out for change.

Then let's just agree we need to work together to find and vet people to replace the current School Board members. They should not be elected to any future office in the county or state.

When schools are underenrolled--and there are lots of kids leaving those schools--just maybe, the School Board should look at why. The answer is not moving more affluent neighborhoods in to "up" the scores. The answer is working to bring the students who are there up to speed and to stop the egress of students due to pupil placement.

In the discussion of Herndon kids going to South Lakes--it may not just be that they want to get out of Herndon--it may be that they want to stay with their friends at Hughes.

Eliminating AAP centers could be a first step.
Putting full AP in ALL schools would also be a first step.

Back in 2018/2019 it was said in work sessions that they were going to have "courageous conversations" about why there was flight from certain schools.

It's been nearly 8 years.

I can be courageous. Poor performing schools allow kids to transfer through AP/IB and AAP Centers and residency fraud.

Courageous conversation, check!

Lol. Well, they can’t force people to buy homes in certain areas.

Regarding programming and the ever present IB>AP transfers … they are too proud, arrogant, and out of touch to admit that IB is generally less desirable and should be relegated to a small number of opt-in sites as a magnet program. However the cynical part of me says that they know that transferring for elementary and middle AAP, and then HS AP, is how people get out of certain schools and they are loathe to mess with the status quo.

IB. So, you have a kid who is inclined to math and science. But, to take "HL" she must write the essays required.

I am all for writing and produced kids who write well, but know some who have different talents.

This just does not seem like a good model for the schools in Fairfax County. Especially in the schools with very high immigrant population who do not speak English as a first language.

The School Board is a bunch of ignorant cowards. They don’t have the courage to revisit wasteful IB programs. All it takes is a dozen parents or kids telling them IB is wonderful and they are content to continue ignoring the fact that IB meets the needs of far fewer kids than AP.

It's disgusting that they can't bother to update the Boundary Explorer tool prior to the School Board meeting on January 22nd. Is Reid and her staff really that lazy? We should be able to see clearly the "final" boundary recommendations and the impact on enrollments at affected schools.

They will not push back vote Thursday like they did with transportation, right?
Anonymous
Feels like they need to vote to end this (at least for awhile)

Voting for Reid’s recommendation means unnecessary boundary changes this fall and another series of boundary changes to vote on in January 2027.
