He’s a manipulative little twit, as was clear from a video he’d posted on You Tube where he told a DIFFERENT girl he might expose her to community attack for having called him “dumb” (shortly after he’d pointedly said to her face that he didn’t like her in the presence of another student).

Just because his mother is black doesn’t mean he gets a pass for acting like a psychopath. It’s not right that the other girl ended up at community college while he jetted off to California. If you think the girl deserved to have her entire life upended for one stupid comment at 15, you should focus your energy on getting all these black rap artists to stop using the n-word in music they damn well know will be marketed to white kids. They are the ones who have made sure it is still bandied about so often.

Be honest, does anyone really think this UMC white girl's life is over just because she ended up having to start out at community college (instead of some other 4 year college most have not heard of)?

That's not true from what I read. Even by his own words, that wasn't true. He had a motive and likely was actively trying to tear her down. He didn't even receive the text directly from her. It came from a friend who likely was showing it for revenge so how could it have personally hurt him? It was amunition for him. It sounds like the school has a bigger issue with woke cancel culture than they do anyone hurling insults since this wasn't even an insult to anyone. And his anger at the school was misplaced. What would the school have done? It was done while sitting in traffic outside of school? That isn't their jurisdiction. In 2016 no one felt it was important to deal with immediately so why would it be in 2020? And yet in is own words “I wanted to get her where she would understand the severity of that word,” Galligan told the outlet.

It was all about the word itself, not whatever she did. If the word is so revolting to kick someone out of college, the black community needs to stop using it. And UT needs to do a little more research before listening to the mob.

These facts do not portray the public or Jimmy and his friends as being anything but vindictive.
One of Ms. Groves’s friends, who is Black, said Ms. Groves had personally apologized for the video long before it went viral.
Jimmy Galligan, 18, said he had been in history class last year when he received a text from a friend showing classmate Mimi Groves, using a racial slur
The three second clip, taken on Snapchat in 2016, showed her saying 'I can drive, n*****s' as she was sitting in traffic
Galligan said he complained to teachers but said nothing was done by officials
He then decided to hold on to the footage before uploading it in June, after Groves uploaded a post supporting Black Lives Matter to Instagram
Within two days she was kicked off her varsity cheerleading team and was forced to withdraw her admission from the University of Tennessee
Groves, meanwhile, insists he has no regrets, and says nothing would have been done unless he'd posted the video to social media
Groves' attorney Shan Wu said that the school 'caved' in to 'panic' and 'hysteria'
He added that UT did not conduct a meaningful investigation into the video
As it would later transpire, Galligan had publicly posted the Snapchat video from four years ago to Instagram earlier that afternoon, having waited until she had selected a college.
Within a matter of hours, the clip had been shared widely across social media, including on TikTok and Twitter.
As views of the footage continued to mount, as did furious calls from members of the public demanding the University of Tennessee revoke its admission offer to Groves.
In the case of Groves, within two days, she was kicked off the university’s cheer team and forced to withdraw from UT under pressure from admission officials, citing hundreds of emails and phone calls from outraged former and current students.

Her life was upended by her own actions and community college isn’t the end of the world. How many young black men have had their futures ruined or their lives taken from them because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time? Life isn’t fair, I guess this isn’t a rule white people have had to contend with yet.

Hurling rocks just leads to more hurling of rocks. Have you not learned that?

Why should Tennessee put up with the headache and the distraction her attendance would have caused? She learned some valuable lessons. Never ever use that word, actions have consequences, and she is not owed anything.

Umm are you responding to the correct post? Honestly, I can’t get too excited about a rich white girl not attending the college of her choice. There are greater injustices. Hopefully she has learned something and will be able to move on.

This seems to be heavily about revenge of the nerds stuff. She was a cheerleader which in loudoun means popular. He was a nerd.

Because their class of freshman is filled with people who have done way worse than this and they will have to deal with issues of their own making whether or not Mimi attends. It didn't have to be an issue. They made it one for no reason other than peer pressure. It's not the last of their troubles and people will remember. I bet it will actually cause more problems for them than just dealing with the issue in a more respectful manner.

For god's sake, this wasn't even at the school or even at her high school. she had no record of racial issues at any school and was even posting about black lives matter. West Point has a code of conduct that does not allow cheating and yet almost 100 kids cheated in a very public way and are still at the school getting remediation and will be officers in our military. Mimi's actions pale in comparison.

My hope is that as a country we will actually have a discussion of what this word really does to anyone if anything. Whether black, brown, white, etc. If it is such a problem, we as a society need to start pushing back against all cultures that use it. This is the actual discussion that Jimmy started.

He doesn’t seem to have been interested in anything other than taking down a more popular student.

Discussion? There’s no discussion needed. Whites cannot use the word for a whole host of reasons. End of discussion.

I’m kind of baffled that so many posters are struggling with such an easy rule of thumb. I am Middle Eastern not white and I have never had any desire or inclination to say the word and no one has ever said it in front of me. I haven’t worried about rappers or why black people say it. That’s not my problem. Really simple, you guys, I’m sure even white people can do it!

"I’m 45 so to me the word is still completely taboo for all races. But a kid who was immersed in a pop culture where the word is thrown around *constantly* likely does not have the same taboo. Obviously all white kids need to be taught not to say the word ever, but don’t pretend it’s a straight forward issue."

everyone for 41 pages is agreeing - white people should not say this word!! But some of us realize that given how widely used it is by some non-white people, that some kids unknowingly & wrongly use it in that same context before they learn that's wrong too.

I always knew it was wrong to say it, even when I was a child. I knew it was hurtful to black people and generally a nasty and stupid thing to say. A white teen in 2020 100% knows not to say this word.

And I am telling you as a teacher in high school THE KIDS DO KNOW. Just because you’re clueless and never taught them, their peers make damn sure they know they better not say it if they aren’t Black. I have literally seen fights break out over this. Your kids are exposed to way more than you exposed them to or taught them so they DO know. Some just still say it because as white kids they don’t believe anything should be off limits for them and there will be no consequences.
