Before we ever saw Rebecca in the flash forward, we had only seen Beth alone in a dance studio, and Tess and Randall going to see “her.” At the time Randall and Beth were not doing well and fighting over her commitment to dance. I think people assumed (because it was heavily implied), that the “her” was Beth and Randall was not with her. That’s probably what you’re thinking of. |
That sounds right. Thanks! |
Agree. And when my dad had dementia no one in my family saw it. they said that my dad was only trying to get attention from me. man, was I angry. and my mom would make comments about how being with my sister was more fun than with me b/c I would only focus on what needed to get done. it took me about 10 years later and after my dad's death to say, "fine, have it your way and the fun people can start taking care of your affairs. buh-bye" |
Yeah I didn’t get this AT ALL. |
I think it meant to show Randall's ambivalence about therapy and that he might not commit to continuing. Revealing the therapist was to signify that yes, Randall will have a relationship with this character going forward. So it wasn't really about the therapist, specifically, but the fact of a (doctor/patient) relationship. |
I am the same way. Holding together my whole family. And a therapist helped me figure out that I could not shoulder that burden anymore. Unfortunately, my family has pretty much fallen apart. But I realized the cohesion I provided was only really a bandaid, not a cure for their extreme dysfunction. So I had to make my peace. |
Agree. It was a very specific choice by the director. |
I don't think the flash forward with Rebecca in the cabin was the same timeline as adult Jack/singing career/wife/baby. I think Tess is probably mid-20s, so about 12-13 years. Plus, Kevin's kid is about 11-12, right? |
You're right - Rebecca in the cabin is close to present day (if that exists in this show) - it's the big three's 40th birthday. The Jack singing/Tess timeline is much later. In a way, those timelines don't make sense - at least not for baby Jack. He appears to be in his 20's at least, but if we are all guessing it's 11-12 years later at Rebecca's deathbed, he'd still be a kid. anyway, stupid Super Tuesday interrupting my viewing pleasure. |
From what the producers have said, the Rebecca dying era is 12-15 years in the future, putting Baby Jack around 13-15 years old, and the timeline where Baby Jack is an adult with a career is another 12-15 years beyond THAT. We currently have three future timelines in play when you include the flash forward to their 40th birthday. |
Wow. That makes sense though. So it seems like Baby Jack is having Thanksgiving at his house then and Big Three would be in their 60's?!? |
| What did we learn in the 40th birthday flash forward? Were the brothers not speaking to each other or something? I forget. |
Rebecca asks if Randall is coming and Kevin says no, we're not speaking. Remember mom? Unclear to me if Kevin meant HE and Randall aren't speaking or Randall isn't speaking to any of them. |
Thanks for reminding me! |

New episode last night. It was a good one. Most of the way through it, I was thinking, "Man, I have really come to hate Randall." But I forgave him his insufferability a little bit with that last scene from the fire.
And I love Kevin even more. I love that Rebecca sees all of her children for who they are and appreciate what they each have to offer. I am looking forward to seeing how Rebecca uses the time she has left. Hope we see some backstory with Miguel. He is such a great and so far underused character. It makes sense that the writers would wait until this next chapter to fill him in. |
