Thus far he's been portrayed as the perfect dad and husband, heroic, putting others' needs ahead of himself - yet the way he treated his brother after the war was terrible. Nicky was reaching out and wanted to come clean to Jack and Jack wouldn't even let him finish speaking. Jack really didn't want anything to do with his old life, including his brother.

I suppose it just makes Jack's character more nuanced because it shows that not even he is decent and good to everyone all the time.

Me too -- and I'm glad for it. His character was already pissing me off because so many of his Grand Gestures are controlling and put himself in the center of everything. Nicky finally puts himself beyond being "saved" by Jack, and so Jack just gives up on him. Jack just doesn't know how to be close to flawed people whom he can't fix. I'm glad the show is stopping making him look like a eprfect hero.

Agreed. And what happens with Nicky helps to explain Jack’s battle with alcohol. He still carried the guilt of breaking ties with Nicky. I’m not positive of the timeline but it seems Jack started drinking around the last time he saw Nicky.

Nope. When he saw Nickey, he told Nicky he no longer drank when offered a beer. That’s why Jack was drinking hot chocolate. Jack’s battle with alcohol was because addiction was in his dna. His brother was an addict. His father was an addict and, his grandfather was an addict.

Jack had a drinking problem before when the kids were younger and had stopped drinking for years. I think the Nicky visit led to his relapse, just like Kevin is relapsing.

Okay, you're thinking about the episode from F17. Yes, that's when their trip was cut short due to Kevin's injury. There was a different vignette this season, when they were seated on a bench looking at the Washington Monument and Randall asked Jack if he wanted to find his brother's name on the wall and he said "nah, too painful." I'll have to rewatch both to see how they mesh.

I don’t know F17 but it was the Randall episode, “#3” or similar.

Yes, Season 2 episode 10 (which aired in Fall '17). You're right that episode showed them at the wall with Jack touching it, no close-ups of names. Doesn't make a lot of sense that Randall wouldn't have noticed the absence of his uncle's name from the wall. As we now know, Nicky was medivacked out, therefore his name is not on the wall. I feel like Season 3 tried to finesse that inconsistency by having Jack say "Nah, too painful" when Randall asked him if he wanted to see his brother's name. But I can't remember which Season 3 episode.

I didn't pay attention as carefully as I should have last night, but where did it show that Kevin is relapsing?

Chugging booze from a bottle in Nicky’s trailer at the end of the episode.

How did nobody notice he was drunk/tipsy? After all that time sober, it was bound to affect him. Are we to presume that he got in the car and drove himself home after that? Or did he hang around Nicky's trailer until he sobered up. I thought it was an odd time for him to fall off the wagon vs. when Nicky was drinking beer in front of him when they were fixing the ceiling.

He didn’t drive. He didn’t have a car (Randall & Kate took it back). So Kevin let his 75 yr old mama drive.

OH, so I must've messed up the timing in my head. I thought that Kevin had the whiskey after talking to Zoe on the phone. So, the day before Nicky grabbed him and took him to the trailer to fix the ceiling. You're saying that he had the whiskey after fixing the ceiling and that he was drunk//tipsy/regretful when he and Rebecca were driving back to New York in that last scene?

I love the show when we see the Big Three together as adults. They are such awesome but awkward siblings. Randall's face when he asked Rebecca, "Mom, what are you doing here?" And nothing beats little Randall order pizza, "Hello, I'm an adult."

NP No, he did drink right after hanging up the phone. Then later on he fixed the ceiling. Later than that he rode home with mom. She made a comment about how proud she was of him and he had this pained look on his face because only he knew he had fallen off the wagon.

The show kept flashing back to him in the trailer, it was confusing if you weren't watching closely.

I thought kate was coming home to toby being depressed again when she first walked in. Glad he seemed ok.

My damn DVR cut off the last couple of minutes, so I didn't actually see Kevin drink the whisky. I saw Rebecca driving the back with Kevin looking regretful out the window... did I miss anything else?

Once again, they nailed the casting. The present-day Nicky is just as I would have imagined him - looks, demeanor, etc.

Yes! That still makes me laugh. Deep voice: “Hello, I’m an adult.” Loved it!

I don’t know how to post pictures, but Michael Angarano has a great picture on his Instagram of all three Nickys - kid, young adult, old adult. He calls the pic the “other big 3!”
