I think the flashback to Rebecca being in the hospital after the car accident was meant to draw comparisons to the kids’ reactions then and in the flash forward when she’s presumably on her deathbed. Randall approaching the bed as a kid and as an adult...how scared they were as kids, Jack’s speech about how they can’t function without her. Even if you’re an adult, seeing your parent like that can make you feel like a lost, scared kid again. I think they’re laying the groundwork for future problems the Big 3 will face once she dies. |
Reading around - definitely the theory is out there that Rebecca has dementia and that the kids are reminding her of their family history "This is Us." And that the pin the tail on the donkey (remember the mid-season finale) and Toby's mention about having brought the sidewalk chalk may point to recreating the kids birthday tradition. |
The PP has a point. I weigh a lot more than Zoe, but our coloring, hair texture, and general facial features are pretty similar. However, you would not guess that my younger DD is part-AA. As an infant and toddler, she was assumed white. Now people always think she’s Italian, Persian, Puerto Ativan, or South Asian. I don’t think the kid is Zoe’s because she was absolutely committed to not having kids. However, there’s the Disney actor from Jesse and the Descendants who looks entirely White. And a mixed actress on the Y&R had a pretty Nordic looking DD. Once you get down to 1/4 African ancestry, the markers get less obvious. And most AA are not 100% African. I think I read around 75-80% is the average. |
I think Toby and Kate get divorced because her whole family is overbearing and only thinks of themselves, not really about anyone but the big three plus mom. At the end of the episode you see kevin totally dismiss Toby asking him for a water, and no one includes Toby in the excitement over the baby.
If Miguel isn’t in the picture it's probably because he got fed up with the crappy treatment too. |
I think Kate dies before Jack is one. I suspect it’s due to the physical and emotional stress and Toby has to choose to take her off LS. Maybe he becomes badly depressed and can’t care for baby Jack for several years. Rebecca, Miguel, and Nicky do the heavy lifting toddler years and then Toby gets better. There’s a huge custody battle and hence the rift. |
I think there must be some dementia in that scene with Rebecca. When Randall arrives at the foot of her bed, he says to her, “It’s your son, Randall.” If she didn’t have dementia and were just kind of out of it due to illness/medication, he wouldn’t need to remind her that he’s her son. He’d say something like, “It’s me, Randall.” |
But when someone is on her deathbed, hearing is the sense that remains in tact the longest. So it would make sense to announce yourself fully to somebody on their deathbed. |
Yes, poor Toby had to just sit by while his son was named “Jack Pearson Damon”! |
Where does that last scene (with Rebecca, and everyone else in the future) take place? Is that Kevin's pad? |
All the more reason to just say your name. Unless my mother had dementia, I can’t imagine a scenario where I said my name and that I was her daughter. It would be weird unless I thought she might not know who I am. |
Yes, Kevin’s house in the future, in LA, we are probably to assume. |
Do you think Randall, Beth and Tess all moved to LA too at some point? |
Actually, that’s a good question, and I take it back about assuming it’s in LA. In the future scenes, Randall and Tess don’t appear to be preparing to fly across the country, and Beth seems to be in her studio, which is probably in Philly, and would Nicky be in California? Food for thought. |
I think the mother of Kevin’s child will be Sophie. |
No way, I think that ship has sailed. |
