Friday's "snow?"

Anonymous
they botched the call earlier in the week then over reacted / over corrected today. just get it right - obtain better information from local meteorologists and make the right calls. otherwise people should be fired if they can't do their job right

1. MCPS should have kept childcare open on Tuesday.

2. MCPS should either have delayed opening today, or organized better brining around the schools for this morning's on time opening. The cars slipping around my kids' high school was quite something this morning, in the dark. A delay this morning would have meant more snow to contend with, but also more time for trucks to salt, and at the very least, it means maneuvering in daylight! Which for high schoolers driving themselves to school is NOT NEGLIGIBLE.

Yup. Bad calls on both days for different reasons.

Agreed.
Safety wasn’t not the focus for today’s decision.

Wear boots? This is getting ridiculous.

Who buys boots here? You rarely need them.

Guys... The snow ends at 12 it won't be hard getting home since all the snow will have been cleared or melted. This isn't a big snow storm the snow is stopping in less than an hour.

Bad call today was in response to parents being idiots the other day.

Can not have it both ways.

Don't have kids if you can not take care of them on snow days.

"MCFRS is warning drivers that the combination of snow and frigid pavement temperatures is making roads slick and icy, stating: “ATTENTION: SOME SNOW & VERY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL RESULT IN TREACHEROUS TRAVEL FOR THE FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE… the combo of light snow and very cold temps may result in treacherous travel Friday morning. What info from metorologists

That info isn't great. Trumpers made sure of that crap.

I don't understand the issue. All of the parents here are incompetent idiots who are clearly unemployed.

My kid slipped and fell trying to get from the main building to a portable. Kid’s hip hurts, but it doesn’t sound like any medical care is warranted. We’d be filing paperwork with MCPS if it was.

Eh I think it was a genuinely tough call as a delay would still have been unsafe. So it was either open on time or not at all.

That being said it is certainly possible he is trying to "show" everyone what happens when you open schools on time on a cold day with a little snow. I wouldn't put it past him to be this petty.

So what happens? Some buses will be late or get stuck, some cars will slip, because folks here are terrible drivers on a normal day and worse in the snow. And thousands of kids are in school and learning today. I personally think that's the right balance. You can't cancel school every time conditions aren't perfect. People have to be careful in these conditions but life doesn't have to stop. School should be canceled when roads are not passable, not when they require a little extra caution.

Agree. Unclear if delay really would have helped given the snow started late, and closure would be an overkill. Opening on time was also disruptive. Of the three imperfect choices, I think this one was the best.

Delays are put in place to allow clearing and to make calls when bad weather continues.
None of this makes any sense.

There was very little snow at e.g. 6:30 -- questionable whether there was anything to plow as PP said. There was somewhat more at 8:30. Any "clearing" would have just been keeping up with the increasing accumulation, not necessarily improving it. If we were waiting for "no snow" on the roads, that may not occur until e.g. 2 pm, or at no point today, which means closure. I personally think "zero snow" is an untenable standard but obviously others disagree.
